I have receive an email from my employer and said STOP connecting links in the link wheel because of the reason below....

I've read about link wheel in a FAQ with a link building technique, but I've never seen this before.Could you please tell me what would be this technique and how does it work? Is that a white or a black hat stretegie?Thanks in advance!

A link wheel is essentially a way of getting around Google's tendency to penalize reciprocal linking. So, for example if you have two sites, A and B, and link them like this:
?A -> B
?B <- A
...you have the potential for trouble. In this simple case, it's more likely that the links will just get devalued, but if you start cross-linking a large number of sites, then you have a link farm. In a simple link wheel, the pattern becomes circular, essentially. So let's say you have sites A, B, and C. A link wheel would look like this:
?A -> B
?B -> C
?C -> A
Of course, you can extend that indefinitely, and some link-wheel schemes get much more elaborate. Generally speaking, Google is getting smarter about this - they can associate sites a lot more easily than the used to, and they still don't want to see low-value links from sites with little or no relevance. The other issues is that this tactic is really indirect. If you carry it out to A - Z, who's to say that the link-juice from A is going to get passed down that chain all the way back around?My personal opinion is that it's dubious at best. It's also a lot of work for what may still be low-value links, and most reputable sites aren't going to want to buy into a chain like that. Better to focus on solid, relevant links from high-authority sites.
