My website is 2 months old and i have plenty of content, i have zero links except one referred by some random directory service, (i didn't build it)

Should i just start by buying paid links?

My website is in graphic design and asset files niche nice.

Buying links is okay as long as they are quality. You can look at competitor profiles and just reach out to places to try and get some free ones, and maybe offer them money if you really want the link and they won't do it free/exchange.
 
If incase you want to cut down your budget for getting backlinks, you could DIY (do it yourself) using Rankerx or Money Robot or SEO Autopilot, etc.
For example, in Rankerx, one can even link match one's same niche URLs to specific keywords and have backlinks to coexist with an authority link in one's same niche.
It is not a bad idea to have a dummy but real website, just for ongoing testing, which you use just to analyse the quality of backlinks and then as per the analysis (on an ongoing basis), you can decide your backlinks strategy for your actual website(s).

you can start with any links you want, but obviously that only the quality ones will have an impact, and - like it or not - quality links are not free usually.

This being said, there's absolutely no risk in getting a few web 2.0s and foundation links (profile links on high authority sites like issuu, adobe, author.me, soundcloud, disqus, etc). They won't rank you but they'll help with diversifying your linking profile. And since you're in the graphics design niche I think that getting a few links from pinterest (and promoting your site on pinterest in general) can help you gain some traffic, too
 
Start by analyzing your competitors. Learn about your competitors' links. Start by building quality links with decent organic traffic.
 
I would wait for a few more months before Google automatically ranks your site. Let Google know that you are doing everything white hat and then you can proceed to buy high quality backlinks through guest posts.
 
Build Niche Relevant Backlinks through your website
 
Use a backlinks strategy which means analyzing your competitor links use quality and good traffic links also, get niche-relevant links.

Go with quality not quantity.
 
Yes you can start with buying links - the quality ones!!
Diversify your link profile, build some guest post links and some HQ PBNs.
analyze deeply what can be done to improve your site's performance on SERP.

As you are in Graphics design you can use websites like behance, dribble and other image-sharing websites for backlinks. Create some infographics and share them on infographics websites. Also Post some articles on Reddit, medium and other article submission sites
 
First do some profile backlinks and quora. Then a few social bookmarking. Then paid
