What does everyone think about the Yoast keyword/keyphrase density tool and what it says about putting keywords in titles? Is there something better or just researching a high ranking blog post is best? I would love to hear your opinion.

If you want to create SEO-oriented articles, then you should follow their recommendations regarding kw placement. It's a common on-page SEO practice.

The name of the game NOW is not kw density but kw CONTEXT

Remember, Google's RANKBRAIN is using user experience to determine context/internal word logic so any FIXED FORMULAS like keyword density don't work as well as before...

the whole concept of kw density and how many to put in each H tag is all relevant to each niche. you need to figure out the sweet spot based on the top 5-10 search results for your keyword. yoast just gives you general information. it does not consider what your competitors are doing. Still, most of its recommendations are valid, in particular about readability.

to make life easier for myself, i use https://keywordsheaven.com/on-page-tool/ to get a glimpse on what competitors are doing for H tags and <p> tags. this tool does not give clear keyword density result. I do my own manual calculation using MS word for that.

Very nice free tool!

It's always better to alter your content inline with yoast's suggestions. One of the basic On page seo practices:)
