Alright, I've just slogged through getting my first real site up and running and nothing's happening. I need get traffic and I need to get a better method of monetization because my current content lock is stupid.
The strategy
I've got a fairly white-hat website that offers a decent product. The niche and demographics are solid (I'm a Marketing major) and I'm pretty happy with the sales page (I'm a former door2door salesman). The page starts off by telling you that you can paypal $5 for the product, but there's a huge button on the side saying "GET IT FREE" that pulls people into my real monetization method (though I'll never say no to an ez $5). Because the product requires e-mail delivery, I get a double opt-in automatically.
Currently, I'm offering the product for free if people sign up for "a sponsor's contest, newsletter, or survey" (=CPA content lock). Unfortunately, I don't think I'm being "persuasive" enough with the incentive. I was going to make it so that the CPA Lock was embedded in the delivery e-mail, but then found out that it would get spam-filtered out 90% of the time. My other idea was to do a FB-Suggest lock that would give the product for free if you suggested my app page to all of your friends....but then I realized I know jack-all about fbml and connect (even with the wp-plugins).
As far as Traffic goes, there is none. I'm going to buy some fb invites from the famous mr peter shaw, but that's about all I can think of right now. I don't even have an idea of what kind of conversion rate this thing will have.
Does anyone have any particularly creative suggestions for:
a) Traffic
b) Monetization & the sales funnel
c) A newsletter strategy that isn't just click-bank spam.
I'm willing to pm the site to anyone that's legitimately willing to help.
