Is Wordpress the Best Script for Ranking an Authority Site?

But would it be better to put a custom page on the homepage then wordpress on http://www.website.com/blog/ or http://www.website.com/info/

Um... this isn't going to be a popular opinion.... But have any of you people ever seen a wordpress site that wasn't recognisable as a wordpress site?
I'm guessing the answer is no, and that's exactly WHY you don't see authority sites running on wordpress...
(I'd love for people to post tons of wordpress themes that don't look like wordpress themes in response so I can use them)
(Having a nice landing page and then the blog as a directory isn't a bad solution)

Lol, nope just pointing out the observation that authority sites don't use Wordpress (It's my understanding that an Authority site is not just any site that's number 1 for a search term on google) - as I say though, if anyone can point me at an Authority site which does use Wordpress I'll be very grateful!
I've used Drupal and Wordpress in my current job, didn't like Drupal because the webteam my employers were using didn't seem to think the site owner needed access to their own code...
I have to use Wordpress at present, because when you're working for clients they need to be able to make changes themselves and publish articles etc (and yes I do feel dirty), one of the constraints on the world of work is you have to sell out your principles lol.
If I had free reign and could pursue anything I want I'd use Concret 5 http://www.concrete5.org/. Read up on that and tell me it doesn't sound a better CMS than Wordpress!
Honestly sounds a better fit for you than wordpress if you have the technical ability to code a site.
It's not that I hate wordpress, I think it's great for small business/sole traders and individuals who want an easy way to get on the web (It's also VERY nice to sort out for said clients). The problem with Wordpress is that it's designed to produce a certain sort of site. Now you can use it to manage a different sort of site, but by doing so you're actively working against the strengths of wordpress, which seems to defeat the point of using it...

Google sees that it wordpress and google love wordpress,they sad that officaly,i think mat cutt sad that,not 100% sure

It's been a while, but here's what I remember from some time ago:
Blogs seem to be a good way to go in terms of getting a lot of pages indexed. Google seems to like blogs - at the very least, when a site is a blog Google crawls it more regularly and the new posts tend to get indexed pretty quickly.
More recently I've read about how Google wants to get more timely results, especially for news and current events. Indeed, I've seen that myself: There was a fire in a town near where I live recently (saw the smoke, helicopters, etc.), and when I was trying to look up where I might get an online news video feed, I actually found a blog post on a local news type site about the fire maybe 45 minutes after it had started. Now that is pretty fast to get something in the Google first page of results!
What I'm unclear on is how exactly Google determines whether a site is a blog. Does it look for the word 'blog' on your site? Evaluate the site according to generic blog-type features, e.g. individual dated posts on separate pages that are also listed on the main page? I'm not sure about that; will update if I find out. But if you're using Wordpress, Google will definitely know it's a blog.. at least, so long as you don't edit the theme to remove most of the standard blog-like features.
Wordpress is also very easy to deploy so you spend less time on design and get to content production more quickly. Lots of nice themes and plugins available for free use.
Watch out though: Wordpress isn't especially optimized for lots of traffic, if that's what you are aiming for. Look up plugins / server settings that can turn the standard dynamic pages into server-cached static pages - because even the simpler themes typically open a dozen PHP pages and make multiple database calls for each page view. But with a bit of work on optimization, you can really cut down on the server load, and also improve page load times.

that's just silly - my site is on page 1 for a highly competitive term and it's using wordpress and the default twentyten theme

This depends on what you consider an authority site. I've had authority sites and I can tell you this. You can do it the problem arises when you start hitting 10k posts. Wordpress starts getting too bloated and runs inefficiently.
You can also make Wordpress sites look custom done where they don't look like a wp site. I do it all the time. People are lazy and don't customize themes using the same played out layouts.
