This has been bugging me for a while so I decided to create this thread and ask to share your thoughts.

During my short SEO career I`ve managed to rank some decent and profitable keywords. I remember that one of my new sites managed to beat authority sites (like in the pic.) with a keyword in url/a lot of related quality content and good on-site optimization. So what I am asking here is HOW important is that your competition has no on-site optimization? Does it give you a big advantage? Maybe some of you guys have some experience in ranking keywords like this?

Everything else being equal, having better on-page SEO will rank you higher.

Onsite optimizations is important.

There are few sites like amazon that are so seo optimized that their pages ranks for specific keywords even without backlinks.
With proper onsite seo and a few backlinks you can rank easily.

Onsite will always give you the edge you need !

Onsite is only about 10% of the equation, but as in your pic, you could get to #3 pretty easily with good onsite seo and a few high edu/gov links, even #2 shouldn't too difficult. Even in these days where seo has such a high profile, it continues to amaze me how many big players neglect it, a lot of the time they are just there because of their backlinks.

depending on your competition if there is not much competition then with really good on site optimization you can rank higher with very less backlinks..
thats how some micro niche sites work..

On Page optimization matters much. Add more optimized content with rich target keywords must unique.

On page optimization is important, but not as much as people tend to focus on it. A lot of rookies tend to spend hours upon hours on their on site optimization. Modifying text that only a SEO bot would want to read, getting keyword density above a certain %, modifying title attributes on images, etc.

What I focus on primarily:

1. Title - Make it a catchy title WITH your main keywords, this is what people see in the SERPs so make it something they want to click on
2. H1 - Make sure you've got the keyword in H1
3. Keyword atleast once or twice in the content, naturally used of course.

Thats it! Focus on building high quality backlinks after that.

Onpage SEO Optimization is as important as offpage SEO optimization.

An addition: Focus on description and keywords. they are simple, basic but vital elements that are mostly ignored.

When I first read the title the first thing I thought of was "Are tires important for my car?"

Sure you can move without them but you will not go very far or very fast. Same with onpage seo.

It's got to be used as part of the package, a bit of everything is good as it doesn't mean all your eggs are in 1 basket.

Damn, I think I did not manage to make my question sound clear enough. I know that on-site factors are important but I am not sure if having my site well optimized would give me a serious edge among competitors like those in my screenshot or if it just gives me a little advantage.

BTW, thanks for the answers to all the guys who have read the entire post not just the topic. Any more opinions?

You can easily take care of on-page SEO with a few plugins and yes it's important.

If you are following strategies for on page seo it much help you for getting rank on keywords. Add some meta tags and keywords with unique contents.

It is important, I build tons of sites and have tested this. Having the right on-page SEO and enough content will help sites rank better.

On site SEO... does it matter?

Most certainly.

The content on your site is what is crawled by the bots and the more quality content with decent KW density will make the bots happy.

I can attest to many different sites ranking because of on site SEO and those are not onoy my sites.... solid onsite SEO eith decent backlinks make aGoogle happy site.

Content is King and backlinks are Queen and together they make good children.

it seems that almost nobody bothered to read my first post but thanks anyway...

@Simas9: You have competation with PR5,6,7 in the above image. They are hard to beat. I m not saying it's impossible to beat them but it takes some time to outrank them.
