Off-course, it is! Keyword optimisation is as much important as the content optimisation. If you will have the best optimised keyword with the optimised contents then it will be beneficial for attracting the traffic towards your website. For keyword optimisation, most popular technique is manual keyword research. You can find the keywords online and note down, after that use popular among them. You have to generate your own ideas for the keyword search. You can check the competitors keyword.

You can use the tools too for the keyword research. The traffic which you will get after the keyword optimisation is the actual and quality traffic.
 
You don't have to optimize in order to drive traffic unless you want it from the search engines, and even then it may not be necessary. It isn't that challenging now days to build a following on social media platforms if your willing to do the work which is more than enough to drive traffic and make sales. I believe in doing everything and anything that can be done in order to reach the goal. This means that I believe you should hunt down the best keywords you can for your niche, create amazing content around those keywords, and use social media platforms to help build a community, links, traffic, and sales.
 
Of course, keyword optimization is essential as much as content optimization is. if you follow the rules of keywords while drafting any content it could toggle in the highest place in the Google search which would ultimately help in dragging the traffic towards your website. If you work both on keyword optimization and content optimization equally you might get the traffic you always wanted.
 
It's not important if you build your traffic without SEO, from social media for example... but it's strongly suggested if you want to get organic traffic from search engines... SEO means search engine optimisation, so you can't do it without optimisation, it would be just SE ;)
