Without knowing your article count/quality, SEO onpage & offpage, backlink quality etc.
This is why you buy 1 MNS and learn to rank it, BEFORE buying 50 with no idea what you're doing.

You need content + backlinks, that's about it. Slowly hit your sites with a variety of backlinks. High PR blogposts, High DA/PA Blogposts, Niche blog comments, Niche blogposts, PAD submission. Did you think you were going to rank these sites with just a few social bookmarks?

EMD Sites don't just rank from nowhere
You have to make some SEO for them same like you do for every other site.
Start creating high quality backlinks, send some social signals, optimize the content, make some on page SEO and eventually you will see them rank good

If you're not familiar with the basics of Link Building, someone to check out and will certainly get you started in the right direction is Matthew Woodward.
This will teach you how to properly build backlinks so you don't rely on services only.
You can make these sites rank, but start with 1 at a time. Pick one, build proper backlinks to it, send services (bookmarks, social signals, xrumer blasts) if necessary.
Then move onto the next once it's ranking nicely. These on average will only earn you $30 a month each, so I assume you wanted to make $1,500 a month right away hmm.

You may have been hit by Penguin 2.1 and Hummingbird updates. Try 301 redirection or next time create quality links only

Nope, quite a few EMDs still ranking.
Are you showing up *anywhere* in the SERPs at all? If so, I'd build a few high PR links with partial match anchors and a few web 2.0s with naked URLs and generic anchors... that should get you moving fast. To add to it, build proper bookmarks, etc. Just make sure you don't buy one of those services that spam 1000s of links in a day to your main site. I'd also be wary of building too many links if the niche is esoteric -- sites are ranking with very few backlinks in those sort of niches, but just bookmarks won't get you anywhere.

Makes no difference, as long as they're not interlinked and not in the same niche.

As per my view, ONLY EMD is not enough if you use EMD then you must do some decent seo on each of your domain, EMD lowers your SEO efforts 30% and rank fast than others...
EMDs (especially non .com) have no added value at all. They still work but wont help you in ranking. You'll have to do some decent linkbuilding and they'll start to rank and this is not only with social bookmarks, you need a variety of good backlinks so it looks like a natural link profile.
