Backlinks are on the throne, content just serves them, but for sure you have to post a good variety of long-tail keywords within a single article.

I've seen so many sites that have worked hard to rank, only to deliver the worst sort of badly written, poorly targeted nonsense onsite, that I think people focus on links and rankings too much. Focus on converting the traffic you have first.

There are many instances where the user could not give two fucks what the content says.
 
Good content that solves problems/questions is king..

I always ask myself a question - would I love the content across the whole site if I was a returning user who knows my competitors? .. if yes - you are on the right spot.

.. all the people (who claim that backlinks are the next important factor) make me sad :/

a suggestion - start shooting photos for those articles and post 3-4 large images in every post and you will see the traffic, bounce rate and shares go up.. as well as your income.
 
lots of content - be it high or lower quality - equals more longtails you did not target
and more longtails for me has equaled in more links from other site owners who discovered that content through longtails which then linked back
That said I use social media to amplify and speed up this process

anyway depends on what your goal mine is a longterm authority site

That said I have ranked for good competitive keywords with one page sites - it all comes down to strategy in the end
content is just ONE of the means of getting there
 
Ya content is always king if it is unique, good readability, high quality, deep research, different information than other sites.

Good quality content is important, but it's only one factor to take into consideration. You've got to have good on site SEO, get backlinks etc. Content alone is very unlikely to rank well unless you've done some serious keyword research and found really low competition keywords to target.

It is absolutely king... because good content leads to good backlinks... Plus, google is focusing on quality content more and more, and the ability to skirt around that is going to get more and more difficult.
 
I would say it is king! Content design is important these days too....something your viewers can really engage with. If they engage with it then backlinks will naturally be built for you.
 
I sell a product and I have been #1 for my targeted keywords(medium competition) for a year now without having done any SEO whatsoever. I just rank high because my website has a high click through rate, so in certain situations content can definitely be king. At this point my website ranks rank 15k on alexa in france(because the webserver is hosted in France it seems) and I have still not done any SEO.
 
definitely content is king but don't forget about link building..
 
I would say that content is really important.
My reason is that if you have great content you will get natural backlinks but simply getting artificial backlinks to a very poor quality content site will get you penalized eventually.
The quality of your website is often a deciding factor at the level of penalty you will get in case serious violations are detected by google.
 
I truly believe that content will always be king. You need good content on a site to get some good traffic.
 
I dont really think content matters to be honest because if you think for a second how many TOP sites/blogs you see that have the dumbest cotent? well i see a lot of them backlinks are important, loads and loads of traffic and monetization is the key... Content was never important to succeed

Where did you read that, over at DP? Money leads to high quality backlinks.
