Back in time, i used to buy plenty of magazines from the market, and write all those articles to my website.
I never built back-links , but still google used to give me plenty of traffic as my articles were unique and they automatically get ranked for plenty of long tail keywords. Made plenty of money with Adsense back in 2009 with this trick.
Just wondering if it's still true? is the content still the king in 2015
Do share your experience here

Content is not king. Your method explained above can still work but learning SEO and going for some good keywords is much better IMO.

I put a one page website up with 500 words of spun content, got 100 do follow profile links and spammed them.

I sent the profile links about 5 months ago with no other SEO.

I actually forgot about the site and randomly checked on it last week. The searches are low but they are related to a $30 clickbank product so its good money.
 
The above answers are rather bold. Content is definitely the king if you manage to hit the SERP #1... and that would happen with the right keyword selection, long tails that is. Of course if you're chasing very competitive keywords pure content isn't going to get you far. But with low competition long tails, content (and perhaps a handful of backlinks in the beginning) is all you need to get the ball rolling.

Your post seems rather contradictive.

I used to be a hit-and-run marketer. Create some shitty content, get it ranked, banked some dollars, watch it tumble, try and do it all again.

Then I realized that if I created good, high-quality content that people LIKED, I could INCREASE MY CONVERSIONS and increase the amount of money I made per-visitor so that I needed less traffic. Oh and I could rank naturally/organically without even needing to build backlinks (with backlinks being optional) because people would share my content themselves.

Yes content is king, irregardless of the algo per-say being able to figure out whether content is good or not, HUMANS can figure out if the content is good and if it is good they'll interact with your website, and if they start interacting with your website watch your rankings rise and your income too.

That's a rather labored metaphor, but it's not too far from the truth. Having crap content on your site, regardless of where you rank isn't gong to do you any favors.
 
High Quailty Backlink is King, not Content. last days i ranked a single image website with few quailty links zero content
 
It is King and it will be til last because Google still believe that it will work better with content.

Let me explain. If you chase low competition keywords, by publishing great content you can make nice income with zero (or very little) backlinking yourself. Your posts will be ranked high enough for visitors to find your site, and when they see that great content, they will want to share your post on their website/forum/blog. Hence, your website will get even better rankings without you needing to do anything but publish useful articles. That's why "content is king" is true for low competition keywords.

I understand not everybody thinks this way, but for me it has worked great :)

Words of wisdom. I have experienced same kind of trends, conversions are better with high quality content and as a bonus, you will get those backlinks from actual sites when your visitors notice your content is useful and they want to share it to their readers :)

So how does this make content king?

I can rank a low comp long tail with and EMD and shit content. If content was king, I would be able to rank high paying keywords within a day and make thousands. However, content alone will not do this.

The "content is king" is undoubtedly a very bold statement. On one hand, there are those who say "content is (always) king". That is not true for the reason you said: ranking high competition keywords with a fresh new site with 0 backlinks is impossible. On the other hand, there are people who say "content is not king", implying it never is. That is not true either, for the reason I discussed above:

You can rank low competition keywords with content alone, and if it's actually useful content, your conversions are much higher than with shit content. You will also get (most likely high quality) backlinks from your visitors whether you liked it or not, that will help you get even better rankings and also reduce the risk of getting Google slap because of a bad backlink profile.

So as I said in the post above, "content is king" is true for low competition keywords :)

I've seen so many sites that have worked hard to rank, only to deliver the worst sort of badly written, poorly targeted nonsense onsite, that I think people focus on links and rankings too much. Focus on converting the traffic you have first.
 
I have heard everywhere that content was king and I followed that path for 6-7 months. I have spent lots of money for good content. None of 150+ contents went viral during these 6-7 months and none of my pages ranked well. Best ranked page is on the 3rd page with 2900 monthly search. No organic traffic at all.

I have hired content writers on this great forum and tried a few other sites. I have published 500+ t0 2500+ words articles. I know now without some good backlinks they are not going to rank.

During all these times I only tried to rank easy keywords (500 - 2900 monthly search). I am not going to give up with good content, but I will do more back linking from now on.

This i totally agree too, why do you want bad content when you'r ranked #1 - 3 people will click and go away again as soon as they see your shitty content, so you waste the traffic you get.
