Because AlexaRank is calculated using the Alexa Toolbar. Alexa takes the browsing data from the millions of people using the Toolbar and calculates the traffic ranking of each site. As Alexa states, while low traffic sites are harder to gauge accurately, once a site reaches a 100,000 or less ranking the accuracy of the measure increases. Hence if you can top a 10,000 AlexaRank, or even 1000, the credibility of that ranking is increased.

Alexa traffic is just an estimate. If you look at it roughly, it's accurate: if your rank drops that means that you're getting less traffic and the other way around: if your traffic is getting bigger, so is your rank.
The rank number isn't exact, meaning that if your rank is 100k you're getting 4k visits a day, but it works okay as a rough estimate.

I think Alexa ranking is a joke, though it claims to be ranking sites based on internet traffics, it doesn't generate any income.

Alexa positioning has no impact on positioning on the SERPs... In otherwords it is not a positioning element... It is an economically possessed outfit and is really claimed by Amazon and thusly have their own particular benefit making motivation.. A few individuals assume their are some type of free association like the UN, however that is not the case lol... They may have some helpful measurements however its all evaluations and for me I dont consider any of it important...

Sometimes I just wonder , Why ppl keep checking their alexa/ PR and getting nervous lol . I dont even find any ego satisfaction

It's accurate to an extent. Don't rely on it completely but it does serve as a good guide.

Nope, I used to have a blog that had an alexa ranking of 17k with almost no traffic, this was about 10 blogs that downloaded the alexa tool bar and if you click it daily to check your score your score goes up daily, it's not a very reliable way to rank websites. I wouldn't even focus on anything that shows website rankings

I noticed my site ranking keep dropping from 300k now to 700k
i think there is nothing to worry about it. . Alexa just provide's a rough figure's about your site traffic..

Just install the alexa addon in chrome browser and alexa widget in your site. That's all.

i see lots of members saying alexa isnt reliable. what's the alternative tool that gives a legit gauge of traffic?
