Instagram is switching its feed from chronological to best posts first

Excited for this! Let the games begin! lol hope to get less competition and more engagement though.

I was initially pissed about this, but you guys have changed my mind. Thank you all for your voices of reason.

Looking forward to the change!

if you have big accounts it should be good ..... but much harder to bring one new one up....

I must say I am surprised with the reactions and answers.

This is Facebook all over again - pay to be seen. I dont know anyone that is banking hard with facebook pages now - but I know loads of people that did bank hard 3-4 years ago ...

Would love to share your optimism but I kind of see this as a beginning of an end for IG.

This is seemingly going to play well into to the hand of buying fake likes, comments, etc.. However, i bet they put in more protection against fake likes, etc

I really don't understand the optimism around here. This is Facebook all over again, they WILL cut exposure of profiles with a large number of followers! If you get 1000 likes prepare to get 100! This will likely kill shoutouts as well (or reduce its power even more than already is)

The good side is, a new top good social network might arrive.

I already mentioned it some time ago and all in here were like: "nah, it's Instagram not FB". Well, there you go. :)

PS: lol, honestly, how could you not foresee this when IG was sold to FB?

Why do you think it will be so horrible? I don't understand your logic.

First I want to see it, before I jump for joy.

Most people are following hundreds of accounts and many of them are the big shots with a few million followers.

Good luck competing them, if you are not 1 of the big ones.

But posts are not gonna stay in the upper part of the feed only because of serious engagement.

Fundamentally, this "new" algorithm is made so the users won't miss the posts from the people that entertain them more, let those be pages of their friends or yours.

So if a user is engaged in your content and genuinely enjoys it, then your posts will show with a higher priority for him. And this priority could even be bigger than the one of larger accounts where he might be less engaged than on your posts.

At least, this is how I see it, but I could be entirely wrong. We will see how it goes in the future months.

Jaymien.

Pretty Smart by Facebook. I mean their ultimate goal is to create the ultimate ad experience for its advertisers. Wouldnt you want your ad on top of a users feed? We will figure out a way to game it..

They could be using facebook contacts and likes to determine how personal your feed is, to me it sounds like they are giving verified accounts and friends top priority

This and also the usual engagement with that user/page. The more you engage with the same content the more you will see it.

it could be good or bad for us, depends on what you do with your following, I hope it kills the shoutout game so all these spammy kids can fall back lol

This is facebook all over again, PAY for exposure/engagement. You've been getting it for free for far too long...they have to make a profit somehow right?

This impacts small niche and small business. I've had pages for small business / clothing brands that had 16-25k reach with 50-500 engagement per post drop to 5-6k reach and 5-50 likes, maybe 100+ on a really good post that use to hit 500+.

In terms of brand awareness, there's a high % of individuals in our market that know of the brands and small business but NEVER see posts from our Facebook page. The past 2 years we've relied heavily on IG because people who follow our brands do it because they like our shit. A to B testing between FB and IG for announcements, promotions, or original content; everyone sees the IG profiles. Facebook Pages have just been hit or miss.

Yes, we sponsor posts once in a while, but the engagement isn't there anymore without it. But sponsor posts aren't converting leads enough to make ROI.
