Hi folks! :)

I saw yesterday that Instagram said that the platform is not an "photo-sharing" app anymore. And yes, they maybe are right and that's the way to go, and they will start focusing on video instead of pictures. And that's bad not only for me as a photographer.

My plan was to get followers on Instagram (around 1-10k) then create a YT channel to start producing videos and/or tutorials/how I shoot my pictures meanwhile I update my "portfolio". But I think that "dream" is dead now with Instagrams new update...

What are you guys suggesting me to do?
Any links about how to start a YouTube channel as a photographer?

I want to learn as much as possible. I like the process and the journey to 100k followers, I like to work hard and want to fulfill my dreams as a photographer/social media creator. It's a long journey, yes! It will take some years, YES! But I want to do my best to get to 100K followers.

You already answered your own question.
Start sharing video tutorials about photography on IG and YT.
Find some tutorial about how to profile your YT channel and videos and hashtags on IG.
You already have the main part done: which is great content.
Best of luck op.

I don't know how long the videos can by on IGTV but I think of creating videos on YouTube, and from the original video take out some small pieces and put it on IGTV and creating even smaller videos and put them on Reels/tiktok BUT the thing is.

I don't know how I should record it, and make it interesting/entertain the audience
and the biggest problem - I don't have much money to go with (that's not a problem the problem is to have a editing program I have a MacBook but don't know how good iMovie is to edit on?) In other words my biggest problem is "HOW to start", the starting process is the hardest because I have never ever been doing it before...

Have you considered Pinterest as an option?
Well.. yes and no.. I want to learn the platform if that suit me, but at the same time, I want to start with social media in Swedish and don't know how many Swedish people there is how using Pinterest? How effective is it for photographers?

Wow that would be very sad at least to me, i don't think they'll remove pictures completely from their platform

I honestly believe it is a way to go for someone who is somehow involved in art.

Yeah, I know.. the pictures will be there, but Instagram will focus on Reels and not promoting pictures that's all but its sucks for people who post pictures 90% of there posts.

I will try it out and see how its work. Do you know how big the pictures should be? I mean in size 4:5 and so on?

They've even introduced monetization for videos as well. Not for everyone yet though. More competition for youtube.

Overblowing the impact of the platform's shift to capture the value of video.
The platform isn't dead for anyone that chooses to post non-video related content.
It's just now its also "competing" for the same eyes that do want video content.

Picture content will only be dead when PEOPLE NO LONGER WANT TO SEE PICTURES.
That could be said for any niche or subject matter.

Competing for market share over video doesn't mean they are stripping the platform of pictures.
Also, they don't strip people's interests for photography. Only the users decide that with their attention & engagement.

I'm sure pictures posting won't change a bit. Don't worry about that.

It's still working great for photographers. It's just a matter of how you reach the users interested into your content.

Alternatively, photographers can also shoot videos and upload them as Reels, which can work pretty good too :)

Thats not right my friend they just will focus on Videos not on Photos after the update. You still could get Viral :)

I would suggest a mix of both
Maybe some reels where you show the behind the camera scenes or stuff like that
I don’t think Instagram will ban photos

Go for NFT art & telegram channels, explore this niche it's hot and it's the next trending thing for a decade from now.
Use forums to promote your works.

You may ignore this advice, but maybe years later you will remind yourself of this post, so take some action pal! :)
Also use Pinterest, they are very friendly, the images (if unique) will rank immediately on Google.

I am based in Sweden and I use it, my wife uses it, all her female friends use Pinterest.
I know at least 30 women in Gothenburg that use Pinterest daily (usually over 30).

I believe others use it as well, simply they are not your age group or you never had a chance to discuss that with them.

A lot of people still love to use Instagram to view quality photography. Maybe you can somehow integrate the increasing popularity of video consumption into your passion for photography. Maybe a Reel series with tips and tricks for amateur photographers? Reels about interesting facts about cameras, or explaining the different camera/lens types?

This way, you'll be reaching a lot of people, and the majority of your feed will still be photos!

Have you started already? I'll advise you to start something and learn through the process.
Visit YouTube, that's where you should be searching.
Just know what to look for and don't get distracted by cat videos.
Take action!

Why limit yourself to photos? Add videos, reels and longer videos with IGTV and you're good to go.

Things will never remain the same, with another update, they might ditch something else and you will have to keep updating yourself.
