im very new to all of this. I understand that white hat SEO is basically just taking advantage of an algorithm. but what about black hat? what is it? how does it work?

Yup, nicely put.
Basically, just lurk around forum, use search option and enjoy learning. Mostly it comes down to lot of testing to select black hat SEO methods that work. Do it with a twist and hard hard work thou.

They are both taking advantage of an algorithm. By having knowledge of how the algorithm ranks websites, you can do things which will make Google like your website more than others, even if the other websites have better content and are more valuable to real people doing searches. White hat is considered doing things within the policies of major search engines (basically just Google). Black hat is considered doing things outside of the policies.

But one is generally a bit more risky in terms of the internet.
One is where you do generalized SEO that Google "approves".
Anyone doing SEO should just know that there is no such things.
Or at least accept that you're doing gray hat... Because all SEO
in ToS is against the ToS.
Act like a real business get yourself branded, then afterwards you can
use more of the "black hat" based techniques, such as guest posts and
PBNs a lot safer than those who just go straight to PBNs guest posts etc...
It's a lot quicker, safer and cheaper!
