Lets take a look at formspring it has 29 million users, it dose not compete with Fb but having a website with 30 million users means something into the online world right now.

My advice is to search, think and change your state of mind. As i see your goal is to create the next facebook and i'm sure that Mark Zuckerberg ideas was not to create the next myspace, his goal was to improve communication globally. Try to find a problem to resolve or awake the curiosity in people with some exciting innovative idea.

Your planing to compete with Facebook and instead of actually making the website. You thought it would we be a good idea to post a message on a forum where the users find all kinds of ways to exploit these kinds of websites. You Idiot!!
 
Be very difficult, not impossible though. Social Media has only been around a short while in the context of an industry. So there is room for improvement. You would have to pretty much revolutionize the social media market and how people connect to beat Facebook. I mean Google can't beat them. So you have to have one hell of a concept, backed up by a Unique Selling Proposition to get people to join and then money to market and build it.

However, I'm talking about building it from scratch too. If OP is one of those people that have bought a script that has "some features" that Facebook doesn't have and think that will beat it, then lol you're dreaming.

You'd never know guys. Did the whole world support the guy who created fb when he took his first step? Probably even his family might've opposed it. But there he is now, one of the richest persons in the world.

I wish you the best luck. I will be your competition. I am working with programmers now. Just filed our llc for investors. We currently have about 5 investors interested. Our original business plan was for 15million. We toned that back big time just to get going. Lol. So hopefully in the next couple months we will have pre launch.
 
unlike most people here I wish you the best of luck. The only worry I would have is getting sued by every big other social network for infringing on one of their huge patent agglomeration
