I like your idea of getting BHW members too fund a project and share the revenue but not a search engine...why not software or an app or something?

I like the idea on BHW coming together to launch a big project but starting a search engine isn't a feasible idea I think. Why not start something like Flippa which is currently a monopoly and we all know how badly everyone needs an alternative or maybe a huge marketplace just like Fiverr but focusing around IM. That can be easily done. Lots of other small projects can be started with crowdfunding on BHW which is infact a good idea..

Agreed mate^ we could all chip in and make an authority site and Flippa hasnt even got a good design in my opinion.

Op, Just create a brief of your idea what you want and how will you do it and send it to super admin and the owner if they are interested then nobody will comment

Actually a great idea, but you cannot run a business with that many voices involved. It probably can be done, but success is not guaranteed because of the steep learning curve. Google benefits form the millions of Affiliates sending it free content to monetize. Without all the websites displaying contents Google ads would not be profitable. That's why Bing is lagging in search dominance, they need Affiliates and they need it fast.

What is SEOclerks?

OP, yes, it's possible to beat google, but you need to think a bit different.
1) Why would common people use this search engine? If it wouldn't have something special I think nobody would be interested in it.
2) Monetarization - definitely not CPA. Everyone hate it. CPM is ok.
3) You need to think about algo. It's really important.
May be, it would be better to create search engine for social media or smthng.

An alternative to Flippa........yeah that's an excellent idea that is very doable.

Your proposal is good... what we need is an idea

an idea that is ahead of its time, an idea that will revolutionize search, an idea that will make google search look like a band wagon and our search engine like a Ferrari.

If you've got it count me in.

Google is not immune to being taken down, for example at one time in history people thought horse carts were the fastest mode of transport until cars got invented.

~idea: let's look at nature ... our brain in it own right is a very advanced in terms of how it does its search..yet it uses less power and occupies less space than a computer having capabilities similar to it ....coming up with algorithms or programs that simulate how our brain works is definitely one way to go.

here is more on how the brain does its search compared to computers:
"In computers, information in memory is accessed by polling its precise memory address. This is known as byte-addressable memory. In contrast, the brain uses content-addressable memory, such that information can be accessed in memory through "spreading activation" from closely related concepts. For example, thinking of the word "fox" may automatically spread activation to memories related to other clever animals, fox-hunting horseback riders, or attractive members of the opposite sex.

The end result is that your brain has a kind of "built-in Google," in which just a few cues (key words) are enough to cause a full memory to be retrieved. Of course, similar things can be done in computers, mostly by building massive indices of stored data, which then also need to be stored and searched through for the relevant information (incidentally, this is pretty much what Google does, with a few twists)."

if you make a search engine which can find high pr domains with d0f0ll0w links and edu and gov sites you have a good number of future users here.

Very off topic, and I am sure someone has mentioned it before, but what do you guys think of the idea of BHW members starting their own search engine?

I am confident there are some very good programmers here at BHW.
Sure it would be a massive project, and would need funding but with with the amount of members there are imagine the following:

BHW moderators create an escrow account or a social crowdfunding account.
Everyone (who can) on BHW donates $5 to the pool (which would be under the control of two trusted longtime BHW moderators)

With 250,000 members, assume half of them contribute at least $5 would mean a pot of $625,000 as seed capital.

Then BHW evaluates programmers, come up with a scope of work and then a second round of funding for marketing and maybe even some free marketing by members too?

Its time to upserp Google, and with another major search engine BHW could have an alternative means of income, of which profits could be given between BHW and the members who contributed seed capital. (Havent figured out how to montize this but maybe CPA offers or something.).

I would be one of the first to put my money where my mouth is.......

5 dollars? :P .........
Only 10 years late and tens of millions underfunded to start. Surely a once-of-a-lifetime opportunity. Where do I send my money?

Even Yahoo, Bing and all the other "BIG" search engines have difficulty competing with google let alone a new search engine. The crawler alone will cost you a fortune in resources.

One thing that I would like to point out to OP is the fact that building a search engine is not a child's play. What you see in google search is just a tip of an iceberg. There are so many internal calculations and synchronizations happening that you will feel like tearing your hair out. The poll might be winning, but this system just won't look feasible.

Sometimes too much ambition can disguise itself as ignorance. I think you can see how much support and funding you'd get from this community for such a project simply by looking at the replies on this thread. I don't doubt that BHW members are capable of great things - especially when working together - but I'm not sure that a SE is the golden ticket idea.

Yes, I see what you mean, although I like to think I am not ignorant as I have spent almost two decades in IT (server admin, network admin, routing, tech support...lots of other areas too not just IT).

Yes, I can clearly see I wouldnt be getting much support from most BHW members, but then again there have been a few people who would be supportive.

Oh no a search engine would not be the golden ticket idea.

Oh yeah I am aware of that.

Google is just an index with engrams and algorithms shuffle the results according to relevance with filters.

There is a lot more to it but that pretty much sums it up.
So I am well aware it is much more involved than just the end user front end.

If you don't have a UNIQUE idea, then keep doing what you are doing: exploiting Google for rankings = money!
Simple as that!
