I like your idea of getting BHW members too fund a project and share the revenue but not a search engine...why not software or an app or something?
I like the idea on BHW coming together to launch a big project but starting a search engine isn't a feasible idea I think. Why not start something like Flippa which is currently a monopoly and we all know how badly everyone needs an alternative or maybe a huge marketplace just like Fiverr but focusing around IM. That can be easily done. Lots of other small projects can be started with crowdfunding on BHW which is infact a good idea..

Very off topic, and I am sure someone has mentioned it before, but what do you guys think of the idea of BHW members starting their own search engine?
I am confident there are some very good programmers here at BHW.
Sure it would be a massive project, and would need funding but with with the amount of members there are imagine the following:
BHW moderators create an escrow account or a social crowdfunding account.
Everyone (who can) on BHW donates $5 to the pool (which would be under the control of two trusted longtime BHW moderators)
With 250,000 members, assume half of them contribute at least $5 would mean a pot of $625,000 as seed capital.
Then BHW evaluates programmers, come up with a scope of work and then a second round of funding for marketing and maybe even some free marketing by members too?
Its time to upserp Google, and with another major search engine BHW could have an alternative means of income, of which profits could be given between BHW and the members who contributed seed capital. (Havent figured out how to montize this but maybe CPA offers or something.).
I would be one of the first to put my money where my mouth is.......
Only 10 years late and tens of millions underfunded to start. Surely a once-of-a-lifetime opportunity. Where do I send my money?
Sometimes too much ambition can disguise itself as ignorance. I think you can see how much support and funding you'd get from this community for such a project simply by looking at the replies on this thread. I don't doubt that BHW members are capable of great things - especially when working together - but I'm not sure that a SE is the golden ticket idea.
One thing that I would like to point out to OP is the fact that building a search engine is not a child's play. What you see in google search is just a tip of an iceberg. There are so many internal calculations and synchronizations happening that you will feel like tearing your hair out. The poll might be winning, but this system just won't look feasible.
