Well in my opinion, to be a successful SEO consultant one requires knowledge of SEO.
As you do not have this yet, I suggest reading the forum and learning SEO.
Then try ranking your own sites, when you can do this every single time with your eyes closed, then maybe one day you might be ready.

SEO is not like mathematics where 1+1 = 2 everywhere.
Every one of us here have differing views, and all are correct.
Read some, and try it by yourself. That's how all SEO experts learn.

Good luck and it's not a daunting task if you can make this your passion. With that said, just like any career it's not for everyone. Within the first year you will realize whether this is your passion or not, I know I almost broke more than once my first year...
