at first get yourself photoshop.
no matter you like it or not many clients love it when you include photoshop in your portfolio.
then learn the basics make yourself familiar with it and last aim at photoshop logo tutorials

Remember 3 things: simple, memorable, timeless.
The best logos are not complex. Don't copy, ignore logo design trends, choose the right fonts for the business and of course right colors.
I would recommend learning Adobe Ilustrator (very similar to photoshop). You can find a lot of ilustrator logo tutorials.

its kinda funny...i have personally always thought that for commercial arts related things such as quality design (logos, graphics whatever) that it helps to already have an artistic background. So many people think you can just buy photoshop and instantly become a professional graphic designer (what we would have called a commercial artist back in the day when this stuff was done with ink and paper)....i still feel the best work is done with those who have an art background...just my 2 cents

1st choice, you need is learn photoshop. it is powerful.

Im graphic designer from 8 years, and learn photoshop for logo creation is not a good idea at all.
You must learn ILLUSTRATOR or any vector program. If not, you will have a big problem printing or using the logo in others places like a web.
And finally, go to a good school if you want to be a true professional.

I started making logos with AAA logo creator. It helped me get a basic knowledge on how they would go together. If you are good at COD: Black Ops or Black Ops 2 emblem editor, you should be able to make logos easily. I have since moved up to photoshop and love it. I can now do so much more with it than just create logos. Yes, logos are nice to make and everything, but with photoshop or I think I saw someone mention Illustrator, you can make so much more than emblems.

Seolic is right here. If you are short on budget, you can also start with inkscape instead of illustrator. The program is fairly powerful and free.
Any Professional logo starts with a brainstorming or another creative method, continues with pen and paper, and finally, the computer.
But please, don't become a "i'll do your professional logo for 5$" guy, this is the kind of things who kills brands, enterprises, and our profession.

This. Anyone can make a logo. It takes skill, talent, a lot of practice and an artistic background to make a professional. Saying you can be a professional designer just by learning photoshop (should be Illustrator...) and reading tuts is like saying you can make it to the World Cup if you buy a football and watch a few games on TV.
Not trying to be discouraging, but just realize that there's a huge difference between someone who made a few dollars making a logo that some small-town restaurant owner liked and a, in OPs words, professional.
So if you feel you've got a knack for design and art, practice practice practice. Challenge yourself every day to make designs for all sorts of imaginary products. Look at how companies and products around you reflect the values of their brand through their design. Go to design school. Good luck!

Yes, this is it! Speaking from 13 years of experience as a graphic designer, Illustrator is what you want to use. You want a vector image that can be enlarged to any size and retain it's resolution. It's as difficult to learn as photoshop though.

If you can not afford photoshop I would recommend practicing with gimp until you can.
