Thanks for the laugh . . . sadly someone has seen this and thought they needed it . . .

Well it isn't really something that give affiliate marketing a bad name. There's really not even anything wrong with salespages like that. It's just funny because it points out why those tactics work.

You can take any marketing strategy, and point out the true purpose and really make it funny. Some salespages are better than others, but any kind of sales involves using some type of marketing tactics.

There's a reason that they have all the little knickknacks, magazines, candy, etc. in little racks along the checkout line in the grocery store. All those little 79 cent mini howto booklets you see at eyelevel next to the cash register? They're placed there for a reason. Brightly colored packaging? They do research to determine which colors will subconsciously make people want to buy. There are people who's entire job function is to determine the best product placement.

There's no reason to be ashamed of knowing how to be a marketer. It's a billion dollar industry. Affiliate marketing isn't any less honorable than choosing to be an independent insurance agent, car salesman, or any other type of sales position.

Just because you someone takes a marketing tactic and lays it out in a humorous way to show how it really works, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with using those tactics. In fact if your a marketer what it should do is help you learn how to use those tactics even better. If your a consumer it should help you learn to be less susceptible to it.

I mentioned in another thread that...
You just need to decide if you want do be the wolf or the sheep. These type of marketing tactics are targeted at the sheep. The wolves are the ones learning how to use them.

You should try to be ethical in what you choose to market, but don't be ashamed of being a marketer. The world would be a much less interesting place without the marketers.

There's clearly a difference between being persuasive and lieing though, and I believe the website illustrates both, for example fake screenshots, fake testimonials, which sadly are oft used in the realm of "online marketing products".

That, in my opinion, steps over the line of a marketer, and into the playing field of a crook.

so when a car salesman sells you a car , do you also call him/her a crook.

This is what my stupid eBook would look like if any publisher were willing to go within a thousand miles of it. I don't know why a PDF needs a cover, but everybody else is doing it, so it must be right.

I hope that isn't the most anyone got out of what I said? If all someone sees in that salespage is how lies are used to sell then they're in the wrong business. My point is that if you look beyond the joke and understand that the lies used to make the joke also highlight the function of each element. It's actually a fairly concise unintentional tutorial on how to make a totally blackhat salespage. If you look past the joke it also explains the marketing purpose of each element for anyone that wants to make a whitehat salespage as well.

That exact same format could be used legitimately. Each element could be filled with factual information about a company, testimonials from customers, highlights regarding the benefits of a legitimate product, and a legitimate call to action urging the customer to buy now. Just because a business understands some psychological factors that can have a positive influence on sales doesn't mean that company is unethical or sells bad products.

There's good salespages and bad ones. Good products and bad ones. Ethical marketers and unethical. But they all use basically the same marketing methods.

If all someone sees in that sales page is the joke aspect highlighting how misleading things can be, then they're missing the value in it. All those salespage elements have their uses.
  • The testimonials give credibility, they can be effective whether they're real or not.
*Obviously it's more ethical to use real ones.
  • The background history helps create an emotional response with the customer. There's a big benefit when the customer can relate to the seller. See's some kind of connection with the seller.
*Again, obviously it's more ethical if the background story is true.
  • The same things can be said about all the other elements on the page.

Marketing techniques are simply tools. How you use those tools definitely depends on your ethics, but that has nothing to do with whether or not you need to use them. Learning how to use standard marketing techniques can make the difference between success or failure.

All the techniques used for the various elements of that joke sales page will work just as well for a totally honest person running a completely whitehat marketing campaign as it does for anyone else.

It might also be worth mentioning that this IS a blackhat marketing forum. :cool2: LOL
  • That salespage could be used totally whitehat by using totally factual information, images, etc.
  • Or.. it could also be used totally blackhat by making up all the information, using fake images, etc.

Most of the people on this forum will fall somewhere between those two extremes.
Either way that salespage is a good tutorial template. That sales format can be very effective.

It's a good joke, but there's a lot that can be learned from it too. Both how to use those marketing strategies, and also how not to let yourself be taken in by them yourself.

P.S. Can somebody post a link to this ebook in the download section? Thx!
