one of my client sites' rankings have dropped suddenly for many keywords. I do not know what updates google is doing. But i am doing almost white hat techniques and nothing blackhat as such.
I hope this is just a temporary.

Google is not invincible and if people stop being able to find what they are looking for, THEY WILL look elsewhere.
Think about the ol' days when Yahoo, Northern Light, Excite and Dogpile all used shitty listing techniques. Their algorithms were well, shitty and ineffective at actually connecting users with the information that they were looking for . Then google came along and blew all other engines out of the water because for the first time, PEOPLE COULD ACTUALLY FIND EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE LOOKING FOR and they could do it quickly. Well, lately it seems that google is willing to lose it's valued users just to weed out every single site that uses backlinking and other optimization methods that they view as black hat.
I know that most of us view google as an unstoppable beast (basically a monopoly at this point) that will never be destroyed. Well, I'm sure most people would have said the same about yahoo twelve years ago. I mean look at AOL? THEY WERE THE INTERNET as far as most people were concerned, but they failed to stay current and they fell behind. The point is, if google doesn't get it together, they won't be on the top ten years from now.
I know this doesn't really help anyone or bring their sites back to the top, but as someone who also lost my #1 ranks today, it makes me feel better when I realize that google isn't as unstoppable as they seem to believe they are.

Google Begins Penalizing Search 'over-optimization'

Google is making a change to its search algorithm to penalize what the company's head of Web spam called "over-optimization" and instead favor websites with high-quality content and less refined search-engine optimization.
Google announced Tuesday that a change in its search algorithm will punish sites that violate the company's "existing quality guidelines" and is intended to reward those "making great sites for users, not just algorithms." The change will go live over the next few days, the company said.
Specifically, the changes aim to reduce the amount of content that surfaces high in a user's search results on Google but that is not particularly useful or valuable; this is also known as Web spam.
Matt Cutts, the company's Web spam chief, first mentioned the plan at the SXSW Interactive conference in March.
Cutts said the algorithm would assess whether websites "throw too many keywords on the page, or whether they exchange way too many links, or whatever they are doing to sort of go beyond what a normal person would expect in a particular area."
Google has since backed away from Cutts' description of the problem as "over-optimization." The company emphasizes in Tuesday's announcement that the algorithm shift will target only those practices, such as "keyword stuffing" and "link schemes," that violate its guidelines.
However, the announcement included the caveat that not all content punished by the changes will "be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise."
The shift to Google's algorithm is likely to affect, at least initially, some websites that aren't clearly violating its guidelines, according to a strategy paper for Web marketers released earlier this month by the search-engine marketing firm iProspect.
"Based on experiences with Panda and virtually all large algorithm shifts, we do expect sites that don't appear to fit the description of the intended target to nevertheless be caught up in initial sweeps," the iProspect paper said. Panda was a significant change in Google's search algorithm, launched in February 2011, that also aimed to boost the rankings of high-quality sites.
However, "subsequent adjustments and tweaks" will likely restore those users' rankings, iProspect indicated.
Google did not provide specifics about how the algorithm will differentiate useful content from Web spam, saying that doing so would "give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users."
The company says the changes will affect about 3 percent of search queries.

Google made several changes and now only those site will rank high which have high quality backlinks and high quality content so do only quality work.

That is absolutely untrue. I had sites that were ranked completely white hat that dropped off today. If that was the case, then this site makemoneyforbeginners dot blogspot dot com wouldn't be ranked #2 for the keywords "Make Money Online". The site has absolutely no content whatsoever and is ranking extremely high for a very very competitive keyword.

Maybe this will help on some of you. It`s about over-optimization.
I am backlinks seller on fiverr from more than 2 years. In last 30 days, over 20 webmasters send me massages about rank dropping and guest what - every of the sites was microniche for adsense. All they have the some problems in their on-page SEO. Some of the sites was with bad on-page seo, but more of them was with the following problem: 100% keyword density in the site`s title and 100% density in h1 tag on the beginning. (100% density - understand only the keyword). On some meta descriptions, alt texts and h2 was the same. I recommend them to reduce the density, something that my gig is not about and guest what... I have 5 personal massages with thanks after on-page seo changes and few backlinks (I selling link wheels).

I could see that many have lost the ranking and got affected with recent update. It will be very good, if those penalized website owner can also share on what all link building they did. And whether it was all blasted with some tool or manually done slowly over time. These tips will help all of us to make a note of what they should not do.
I always hear people doing AMR blast or Web 2.0 creation with SEnuke or Profile link with some other tool and then they blast them with scrapebox. I know it works for many guys but if someone gets penalty for these types of backlinks, Its not a surprise and I will consider this a positive step from Google.

Keep building backlinks.. Don't believe whatever Google says !
Google is just implementing these penalties on sites to scares people off from gaming their search engine !
The WHOLE GOOGLE SEARCH ENGINE works because of SEO !!!
They cannot punish websites for doing SEO, their business model is around it !
Eventually you will get over the penalty and rank better in Google..
Don't use google analytics, webmasters tools, +G button on your sites..
Don't submit for reconsideration.. Your sites will be all fine in few months..
And also "Don't Put All Your Eggs In One Basket".

Damn right, same scenario here. I think this update is temporary as the new SERP positions doesn't make any sense simply because the results found in the first page speaks itself.

never depend on one stupid company (google) for your income. There are traffic sources out there that will bring 100x more visitors than stupid google. Paid traffic is the way to go. You can get 1 cent visitors if you know what you are doing.
by the way, one of my sites was penalized and nowhere in the SERPs for the last 1 month. I just bought paid traffic. Two days back it got back and ranking No. 2 for $5.5 CPC keyword with 7200 exact US seraches per month.
Conclusion: Google is stupid. Don't stress yourself out over stupid google. The internet is 10,000x more than google.

I'm in fact just starting on my journey building sites, but for those that are already on that journey, unaffected (thus far) please be mindful of fellow BHW members who are going to really struggle now to put a meal on the table! Remember, if could hit you one day and I'm sure you'd be annoyed to find someone gloating!

I agree that good SEO on and off page are what will weather the storm. I am not boasting, but my sites did not move much (one dropped 2). I only do manual BL of higher PR sites. I also us the name|site as anchors. I do not us SB for nonsense blasts ever. I do use SB to find a great list of sites to post to all niche related. I have a VA that manually registers/posts/sends me all the info via spreed sheets for easy tracking and monitoring. None of my sites have over 400 BLs. I would be willing to let you us my VA if interested. This is NOT a solicitation......just an offer if interested. There are many SEO TUTs here, just find the one by HARU in 2008. It covers everything you need to be and stay successful with your SEO. Regards.
