I am new and don't know ANYTHING about coding, but I have an idea...

I don't know anything about coding but I have an idea that I want to apply in terms of making a website. I've been around BHW for a while but this is my first post (whoo hooo) so any advice as to where i can learn how to make what I am trying to make would be appreciated.
For obvious reasons, I don't want to go into detail about my idea. But, I want to be able to code something that is able to do an action on a website that is similar to a code to send a personal message to every twitter follower you have. Have seen multiple types of those websites.
I want to be able to learn how to do it, I know a little bit of C++ and SQL but that's it. Don't know where to start,any guidance is appreciated. Excited to finally try something!!!

Hmm you seem to contradict yourself a bit by saying you don't know anything about coding first but the you say you know a bit of Cpp and sql. Anyways, cpp is not really a good language to learn for web programming. I would advise you to learn some HTML CSS and JavaScript. If really want to add some more functionality I would advise you to look into PHP.

I suggest you to pay a professional freelancer here or on upwork, programming isn't something that you can learn in 1 month or 2.

I'm not an expert at all but I think you could use python with selenium which is great for scripting and automation.

Ideas are worthless, execution is everything.

Honestly, if you really are a newbie to programming (as you said). Do not try to do what you said.
For now, at least.

Because what you are asking, isn't too hard to do, but is a tedious task. No in terms of implementation, but in terms of budget and goals. Sure, you could create your idea using any of the dozens of web frameworks out there. But would it be the best choice for what you want to accomplish ?

This kind of knowledge comes with time and practice. So, unless if you are willing to pay someone else to do the work for you. I strongly advise you to take some online courses on web development. freecodecamp is a good place to start (not an ad, please don't blast me).

You should learn first html and css then a bit of php/javascript how they works and frameworks that are needed for this task.

Can totally relate. I have dozens of written ideas but most are just sitting in the drawer. I take too long to excecute an idea. Don't overplan it, because the more you take time, the less chance that idea will ever see the light.

If you really want to learn, you can start with Python. Its syntax is not that complex and it is powerful enough to get the job done.

Well if you don't have the skills for make that idea but you're developing side project that one after one help you to get new skills for reach the final project then it can wait a bit

100% agreed. The largest weath of knowledge sits in the collective of all cemeteries and other forms of grave sites. So many brilliant ideas will never be known, and for this, they are nothing.

C++ is the worst choice of language to start with. Even experienced programmers have numerous issues with it. Video games still crash because of memory errors and issues which are solved with a tradeoff of raw speed in other languages. You will have many many less bugs in javascript or ocaml or python or anything really. I have used valgrind to track down memory corruption, it is much less fun than knowing memory corruption is impossible in your language.

I agree that you should start with a higher level language first, but I also believe that learning low level languages is still somewhat necessary, although not at the beginning.

C++ *can* be a great web language.. Any language with a good enough abstraction library, that you're comfortable and fluent enough in, can work just fine.

C++ allows you to build micro services, which are super popular now with the NodeJS and Go set.

Am I going to tell you a "higher level" language, like PHP or Python isn't worth learning, No.. But I believe use the best tool for the job.

And that tool should be measured by its leverage to execution. Does it take 5 minutes, or 5 days to do the same project.

Now, if I were building a state-ful tracker or something, I'd definitely consider a C++ implementation, to have shared memory state trackers, and SQL persistence.

In which case you'd probably move to Java or C# .NET easily as well.

C# .NET is pretty sweet, but I'm not much of an MSSQL fan (IMHO).


Yes, also to learning about how to use RESTful API's, this is the new wave. ... and also learn how to bind to XML API's as well (this might quickly change your love for C++)

It sounds like you're wanting to make a BOT of some kind.
- Scrape a website
- Parse it for all links
- Identify links in the page (try to find a CSS selector type library -- this will help)
- Generate GET/POST requests to engage those links
- Rinse and repeat.

You can get shared state, databases etc in java and jvm based languages, and the jvm is fast. I'd be surprised if you could build the same app as fast in c++ as in a jvm based language. That garbage collector saves a lot of bugs. If you want to get c++'s speed, profiling and using the JNI will also get you close as is worth talking about. Real time & embedded applications 100% do need c++ or rust or similar. You can also probably get lower memory footprints with c++, but frankly memory is cheaper than programming time.

u need to hire some freelancer to make your idea into real project ,

but if u want to learn ,start with simple task and give it time .
More code u write more expirence u get
