How to track fake analytics traffic?

Hi there, I have recently gotten involved in the SEO game, so this may be a bit of a n00b question. I am currently evaluating the peformance of a clients site and there seems to be an uncharacteristically high number of referals from one particular site. What makes it even stranger is that there are no links from the referring site to the site in question. I'd like to get an idea of why it would happen and how you would track it.

Problem is, I am also getting more of these referrer links that are actually adware

and viruses...you need to get the VTzilla FF Extension and Malware Search FF Extension

to see the link and study it without ever clicking the link.
