How to Scale Up by Outsourcing – Part 1

I agree. I have an in-house team of VA's and writers and I tell you, hiring is easy but firing isn't. Actually, I haven't fire one yet. The bad ones resign on their own (thank you Lord) haha.

Nice share.

+rep given bro.

I would LOVE to read your tips and tricks on bidding for jobs to win contracts! Do you think you may have the time to write something like that for us ? :P

I think many people would find that useful!

Thanks again.

That's why I try and preach honesty before I hire anyone. I get THEM to lay out my terms in a way that equally suits them. If they then don't meet them during the job (if they pass the test job stage) then I just use their word to let them down gently.

Nice share.

Thanks mate, and thanks for the +rep.

My main side is the hiring side however I do do a bit of contracting.

1 thing I always try and do is just get a bit of information about the employer i.e. I'm from Australia so if I find out the person hiring is from Australia I drop something like "G'day mate, glad to see another Aussie on the net" or "I saw the website you've already have developed and think it looks great and this is what I can do to help" early on as well as answering their questions that they listed in the job listing. Also providing examples (not generic ones) but really specific ones i.e. Here are 3 real estate themes which I have already developed for other clients so doing another real estate theme for you is not a problem> always helps as who cares if you can make a good ecommerce theme or whatever if you are applying for a different niche. Being specific with my portfolio has helped me land $1,000+ contracts on Odesk.

To be honest, I feel so blessed because I have found internet marketing WHILE being in a third world country where I can get the best of a certain skill for a pay of $100 a month. The usual problem here is the "too-relaxed" mentality where there isn't really a motivation to excel in life. Still, I'm surrounded by talented people.

However, in your experience with outsourcing to people in a different country, have you encountered many instances where the guy would simply vanish and not go online OR he keeps going "invisible" on you while being late on his tasks?

I've had it happen once. It's exactly the situation I try to avoid which is why I "Hire Slow" and go through a diligent application process.

Do you usually let them answer a questionnaire and stuff?

Just thought this was a funny experience
I just had with someone who managed to
get through enough of my filters to warrant
a small test job.

Them, "Yes, I've done a job very similar to this
in the past. I'll work for $x/hour to complete the
job and it will take me y hours to complete it.

Me, "Ok. Do you understand that you are telling me
how long it will take to complete the job so you
are responsible for completing it in that time if you
want to continue working for me?"

Them, "Yes I understand".

(2 days later)

Them, "I need more time..."
