Thy bulletpointed version is the funnieth thing I've seen in a while, cottonwolf. :D

Thanks for the share, Gwenn. I love useful infographics. They are usually much easier to use than reading through a bunch of text. :)

the Lord giveth ranking, and he taketh away ranking.
 
Yeah, only use the links google give you, that's a bad move. You need a lot more than that, so go to ahrefs, majestic and get more.

I've managed to remove quite a few manual actions even from Neg SEO. I have to state that the attack was pretty small, ~10k links.
So you might laugh but it works if done right, I won't say that it will remove a penalty after you hit the website with 100s of SAPE links or other networks, but for projects that get link by outreach and/or have their own PBN it's worth it.
