I'm pretty sure people are still making money with this currently. I've been looking through some sellers on amazon and ebay and can clearly tell that their buying from retail sites to sell on those platforms for minimal profit margin. Funny thing about this method I actually made a bit of money from this a few years ago when I use to buy electronics pallets and sell them on ebay/amazon.

In between I sometimes went on sites like woot.com and sonicelectronix.com and dropship items from there to amazon. Also had another site I used tmart.com where I dropshipped iphone charging cases to ebay. Wasn't much money at all, but I really just never thought of scaling up and selling in volume. My mind was always centered around buying something for fairly cheap and selling for 2 to 3 times profit which I realized unless you're private labeling or buying direct from china/manufacture it aint happenin cappin.

I do dropshipping on ebay. Recently created an account on amazon. Was whinking to do FBA but can't really find good products. It looks it could be profitable to dropship on amazon. But I'm afraid they will ask me supplier's invoices. According to amazon rules dropshipping is fine but you can't do it from retailers.

In general you are right! You make small money per item when you dropship. But with modern technology\apps you can list hundred of thousands of items, monitor price and availability from suppliers. Semi-automatic ordering and uploading tracking numbers etc.
The other thing is that often it is hard to purchase items from wholeseller. Can be time consuming, fill the form, send all the details, tax information, references etc etc. Or they can say they are not going to sell to you because you don't have a physical store or website. Or their price will be too high or requirements for min order.
