How to jump start a YouTube channel?

I realize it's probably a different process for every channel, but are there any steps or methods I can test to try and boost my initial YouTube career? Drip fed views / comments / likes? Adwords?

I think reddit is a good source of traffic for a start. Just post your videos there and deliver upvotes/comments.
Make a really good video (something really interesting like a presentation of your channel) and promote it on YT - Ads, Ranking, Shares etc.

You could try creating videos that target low competition keywords, optimize your video's metadata to rank for such keywords then boost their metrics by using high retention views, likes, dislikes, comments, social shares, and embeds to match or exceed your competitors metrics. These services can be purchased from the marketplace as well. If you boost your videos using these services on a small scale then there is very little risk for your channel or the individual videos. It would take me to long to detail any specific video ranking methods but there are several on page optimization guides and ranking strategies shared by other users on this forum already. You should be able to rank for low competition keywords for $5-$15 per video which is great considering the amount of subscribers you can gain from a single ranked video.

If you are trying to gain subscribers to build social proof and not necessarily grow a fanbase to promote content to in the future then buying subscribers isn't actually a bad idea. It's possible to buy high quality subscribers that don't drop/unsubscribe at noticible rates that can be drip fed very slowly. I don't have any current recommendations but most smm panels on the marketplace do sell subs. Use a test channel to confirm that the subscribers you are buying are okay before adding any to your main channel. These subscribers won't engage with your videos but do work for social proof (no harm in adding a few hundred in a slow natural looking drip feed to help you reach your total goal faster).
