How to help my Dad with SEO?

I'm going through a similar issue with my grandfather.
All it took was for someone to tell him about the "wonders of blogging"...ugh.

The problem is that you don't want to crush anyone's hopes, but you also want to give them a realistic picture.

So unless you have the patience of a saint, I would recommend giving him a few internet marketing courses (like the new affiloblueprint course) that's going to break everything down and explain it to him in a newbie friendly way. Not only will this free up some of your time so that you can continue to work on your own projects but a few courses will help give him a solid foundation in IM (plus he'll know why its unrealistic to think he can rank for "cheap cars" lol) .

Thats cool. Ask your dad to start a blog using his knowledge of his specific field of expertise. He can easily dominate whatever niche he has a PHD on. SO tell hime to write a blog and you do the SEO for the blog. Then simple monetise with adsense.
Good Luck!

haha your reading my mind. There was a 40 minute 'penguin update' video shared here, that should help him get the basics of unique content

It's not unrealistic to "rank" for any keyword! See the Adwords space on those result pages? If your dad learns and masters that, he need not create authority websites... of course that needs great understanding of how Adwords work (or not work) and how dangerous that can be... but he has already proved that he has a great brain (he has a Ph.D.)! So may be he can learn those SEO / Adwords topics and master them in much shorter time than an average "guru" will. All he needs is to become a student once again.

I am just giving an example of why you shouldn't underestimate him. Of course give him a few topics and tell him why each topic is important. Show him how to find relevant sites so that he can begin his life's greatest journey! If he begins to love the topic then he can master it too.

So if he wants to play with the "cheap cars", don't stop him! Keep a watch on the progress and before going live with Adwords, let him understand how it can be very dangerous!

There could be other ways to get on 1st SERP for those fantastic keywords/key-phrases! May be he will come up with other more profitable key-phrases, more profitable than "cheap cars", "cheap TVs for sale", etc. May be he can go on to become the best online marketer/advertiser/consultant in the neighborhood... :)

He can also think of how to make great profits from those keywords... he may make you his business-partner very soon! lol

Nothing is really impossible in this world! He is a learned man, so he knows the importance of focused learning and mastering things, and knowing the pitfalls too. Make him aware of that though... I think he will love the challenge!

Just my 2 cents! :)

Dude turning your family into a marketing team is an awesome thing to do.

I have my sister doing ALL my graphics work at the moment, I pay her an hourly wage and she is in college doing art which is great as her work is featured on many places on the internet already and she loves seeing her targeted ads in our local area etc !

MY dad is currently facing the same problem at his work, he wants to start a website selling hand-crafted wooden items around the area and I have told him he can live a week in my shoes and see how stressful IM is and how it all works, but how its totally worth it!!

Really hope your dad sees the bigger picture and that its not the easiest thing to achieve, Make sure you do it by the books as you dont want him to be caught out by google, dont do anything blackhat if its his site, work hard on it and teach him that he needs to treat his site like a business anything that he puts into it is a good investment, mostly!

If you explain to him fully about everything, then he is sure to understand, if he has PHD

My dad still cannot believe that i make over 3x his salary in a year working from home as he is a 9-5 worker ! I would like you... love to give him the opportunity & give him financial freedom from a residual income, just dont be a "SON WSO" and try and sell him the dream, firstly tell him the realitys!

Maybe you could teach him about PPC/other traffic sources and CPA so he doesn't have to buy a site.

You can also grab some keyword research videos from youtube and ask your Dad to check those.

Good luck.

I have found that with the older generation, it's a waste of time explaining anything about how things work behind the scenes, how google ranks websites, how affiliate marketing works, most of these people just know how to check their email and that's it.
I personally find it a waste of time. I hope this post doesn't make me look like an asshole, just being realistic.

If he's smart he will get the drift of things very quickly, once he finally figures out how to get traffic to his site and then no one buys anything the reality of it all will set in. May be you could school him on tumblr with ads on them so he could taste a little bit of money in the beginning. I think the best thing that you could do for him is tell him the truth about how difficult IM really is. Let him know its like going to collage for ten years, then finally graduating with your doctorates and someone offering you minimum wage for the first tow years. Well there's always the upside seance he is unemployed IM will surly keep him busy until he can go back to work. You never know he mite be one of those people that just have a nake for IM.

Why don't you just give him an idea of writing a personal blog, He is PhD so i think he can write well on the SUBJECT he have PhD in. he write, you do the SEO thing = Profit. and with time he'll learn every thing, like you, me and every one else did.

One thing you also can do is,
teach him the basics of crating a website, choosing right keywords, article seo, backlinks
teach him only the ver basics(think of yourself what was your first stage)

Then tell him to create a website on his own, yeah tell him to choose the keywords himself let him do everything(remember how you started on your own creating website and failing and then again creating a new one with some mistakes in mind that you did in creating the last one).

Now here is the best part.
When you were new to this and were failing there was google who can help you understandig the things better but when your dad will create his first website and he'll see the results you'll be there to help him directly(no wasting time in reading 10's of blogs). And then you can go into deeper concepts of SEO and all.

This should help him undersading better :)
Also don't forget to update us what are you planning.

p.s. Experience is always better than knowledge.

In what subject your DAD did their PHD?
I guess it will be better if they create a website/blog on the niche they already know.

even if all try to motivate ... sure you can rank and kw but not as newbe and it will take a lot of effort.

the betteris what you are planning. since you have a family with a lot of time make something together ans everybods does what he does best.

so you can make more than one page with work splitted and income will come much faster.

to start with a killing keyword is a common mistake where a lot of peple loose the motivation when not getting ranked and work for nothing.

good luck for you guys
