Hi Guys,

My dad has been unemployed for some time now and has been looking for a job for years (he has a PhD but jobs are low) anyway he likes the idea that i create websites to make me some cash and now he wants me to do the same.

I showed him some of my sites yesterday and he loved the idea.

Today he came to me and said he bought the domain name which involved a really hard keyword and niche. Im feeling really bad for him because he doesn't understand the concept of 'competition' and thinks you can rank for anything.

I feel so bad right now because he really wants to do this since he cant find a job right now.

Im going to build a website with him, with me helping him as much as i can, but how the hell can i explain everything to him? It took me years :(

I hope you guys feel me, i honestly felt like crying when he said what if i rank "cheap cars" or "cheap tvs for sale", i really want to help him. Im giving him some of my websites to keep but i need to know what else i can do?

Any suggestions welcome!

You've got to be honest with him and get hm reading the sites/forums you use...

... Not being straight with him about the difficulty he faces is NOT doing him any favours.

'Cruel to be kind' and all that... If he's an educated man then he'll see what you're saying quick enough. Everyone understands that there's no free ride in the real business world.

Tell him its the same as doing business offline but even worse.

Example ( for cheap cars ) : Tell him that there is only one street in the whole of USA / Your Country that sells used cars and that there are millions of shops competing with each other ( its a very long street ) and only the popular ones get most of the customers. Any new car shop will mostly be less trusted and recommended as the shops that were there 10's of years before have a lot of reviews and loyal customers. Also the trusted shops are at the beginning of this " street " and more likely to be seen first.

The only way to become known is to offer something special which most of the newer shops already try to do.

Remind him that the street is Google.

Im gonna create a powerpoint presentation and show it on our living room projector with my family.

My brother knows the basics of backlinks etc but doesnt know how to rank.
My sister (15 years old) writes articles for me (very good ones lol) so she can also help.

If i can get some sort of family SEO team that would be great, i can be the manager, my sister can be the article writer and my bro can sign up and do all the backlink creations. While this is going on my Dad can tag along and see how everything works.

I think thats what ill do. thanks

I will make sure i include your great analogy :) cheers

just write for him a detailed guide in steps something like.

1. go to keyword tool and write a keyword
2. click on lms and look for low competition
3. choose keyword for building site.

after site is build etc.

1. buy this gig for articles or write them yourself.
2. make accounts at the following sites(vimeo, youtube, etc) and submit the video you made.

well you get the point, And i am sure he can follow steps and it is easy to rank low keywords.

Thanks rettaibi, yes that's the style im going to write the presentation, cheers

He may just show one day that he can rank for "cheap cars" or "cheap TVs for sale"! I mean it! :)

Never underestimate the power of childlike faith! It can move mountains...

If he thinks he can, he sure can one day! Until then, you children can help him become a master --- but the Day will arrive when he will astonish you all with his achievements! **Touch wood!**

Best luck to you and your family! With you guys around, he can easily become a Master one day!

God bless!

If you dad Has a Ph.d, he can probably start a blog about his knowledge. His brain must be filled with ultra-rich content no? lol

Remember that content is really powerfull

True, content is king!. ill see what kind of keywords is related to his knowledge. Thanks

You need to tell him the truth or he may want to rank for "jewelry" ;). You can suggest him to rank some long tail keywords to start with.

Oh this is at a high risk to be complicated, trust me.
You two can be very effective, if you can figure out a clear structure in your biz depending on actual experience... in SEO.
If your father can accept you as his boss, you will make a very good team. He will learn, adopt and give very nice input.
If he cannot accept you, it will all turn out to be a big fight.
Be honest: What kind of relation do you have with your father?

For the actual thing I would just give him tasks that he is able to do - write articles about his PhD topic, perform SB blasts etc. You can improve on the complexity later on.

Best of luck for both of you :)

First your father needs interest or willing in SEO if he is interested then the guiding will easy.

wow
WHole family In Seo
ahhh

If your dad is Interested then it wil pick up fast

Thanks for your kind input. I love my father to death, honestly i would do anything to make him happy. He pays for my university fees even though he is unemployed, he wakes up at 5 in the morning just to take me and my sister to school and university and does it just to make sure we are happy and have a good life. He is a good listener and learner.

Im going to teach him the basics on keyword research (since thats my expertise in SEO), ill see how that goes.

Thanks once again man

Good luck on your journey to put your Dad on the IM world.

Wish you all the success ;)

Thanks m0use and same back to you :)
