How to get listed in DMOZ

One of my sites managed to get listed in DMOZ. It didn't make any significant difference to my rankings. I didn't even do anything special to get listed, I submitted my site and after a few months it just got listed.

Based on that, just submit your site and don't do anything else. Sure you could pay extortionate prices to an editor (Never a good idea, if someone else finds out your site will likely be removed anyway) but you'd lose much more than you'd actually gain from it.

Buy a DMOZ listed domain that is about to expire and move all your content over on the new domain. Then 301 redirect from your original site to the new domain. Just an idea. Another take on this might be to simply buy a domain that is listed in DMOZ, host it, and 301 redirect to your current site. I haven't personally tested it, but the authority might flow through.

yeah IF someone found out, come on... stop your guilt trip attitude!

Just do it and see what sticks and what doesnt stick.... its like saying you are going to hell with lots of fire and torture will be there waiting... I thought this was black hat world? Seems to be getting more like white hat world
 
As to DMOZ, I was shocked to find a few of my sites listed. The basic formula as far as I could figure was time.
 
I don't have a guilt trip attitude, I'm telling you how it is - Why spend a fairly large amount of money bribing an editor to get listed when it could so easily be removed at the click of a button? Not to mention the fact that getting listed in DMOZ doesn't have as much SEO benefit as people might think.

I've seen many stories about every site owned by a person being banned from DMOZ for trying to bribe an editor. It's really easy to get a competitor banned by doing that too.

DMOZ isn't worth more than a minute of anyone's time.

it was important long time ago , but now i am confident its importance is significantly decreased
 
DMOZ is useless dont waste your time . Just focus on increasing your backlinks

Getting bribed with $$$$ to list a site in DMOZ is tempting, especially if you have a young family to support, so I'm in the middle if you know what I mean...

If your website was about web design, and fitted my category (I'm sole editor, apart from Main editor :)) nicely, your site would be accepted. I check new listings several times a day, but it's only a localised category so it's very hard to get listed.

You don't really need to fork out your hard earned $$$$ just for a DMOZ listing, although getting paid to go over submission details for you before you submit would be good, if it was ethical etc. I would get the user to fill out the submission form, provide me with screenshots, pdf, Microsoft Word files etc, of the submission information. Then I would go over and see if everything is ok. Then I would make neccessary edits and send modified file/s back to the person. If they are happy with the modified version, they can copy and paste it into the submission form themselves.

Tips for getting your site accepted:

  • Have a thorough read of their guidelines and stick to exactly what they say. I know it could be 15 to 30 mins of the most boring time of your life, but it does pay off. Trust me I know :)
  • DO NOT use a free email address during submission (or editor application). Examples are [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] etc etc.... You can easily create a gmail address then forward your email from (for example, [email protected]) your domain address to your gmail account. It worked for me :).
  • Submit your site in the most relevant category possible. Yes this can be time consuming but it does really boost chances of site acceptance. For example, my category is "Open Directory - Regional: Oceania: New Zealand: Otago: Localities: Dunedin: Business and Economy: Computers and Internet: Web Design and Development".
  • If you don't see your site in the directory after a month or so, don't harass the category editor by making multiple submissions of your site in a short time frame. I waited every 3 months between trying just to be safe.
  • Applying to be an editor of your chosen category will increase your chances of your site being accepted into the site. I made my application straight after submitting my site. It took only 2 weeks between filing site and submission applications, and getting my site and editor applications approved. Again, the guidelines should be followed. They make you do a "test" where you find 3 other sites relevant for the category then you do a listing for each. Providing you adhere to guidelines for each site's listing, you will most likely pass the test.

I think with DMOZ, much depends on the category and editor.
1)Follow the submission guidelines
2)Make sure you have a content rich site that is no keyword STUFFED
3)Do not keyword stuff you DMOZ submission
4)Make sure you have a privacy policy on the site
5)Submit and set a reminder for 3-6 months, to go back and check the category. re-submit if necessary.
6)Create an email account associated with the domain being submitted.
 
the only thing can get ur site listed in dmoz is apply for editors account and if u get approved , then u can create all ur sites link in there ...

also can earn some cash, by selling this service/.
 
so, a lot of you are saying that DMOZ isent worth it anymore. Is the same thing true about the Yahoo directory?
 
It's a bit like FIFA....you pay your cash...you get chosen.
