How To Find Out 'Top 100...' Article Type

During backlink gap analysis with one of my competitors, I found many of their backlinks from articles that started with "Top 100 businesses in XYZ city" or "Top 40 agencies in ABC state." Those articles didn't make any sense to me as they were intended to pass on backlinks, nothing else. Each such article was passing backlinks to 50-100 websites altogether. What amazed me was that the authority score of such backlinks wasn't really bad. Now I don't understand how to obtain such kind of backlink. Is it paid or what. Who benefits from it? How to find out if one website is working on one such article that suits my niche and city?

Yes some are paid some are not. Paid ones will have do follow backpack link but not all do follow backlinks are paid.
To find out such articles make a list of such keywords use semrush or ahrefs by doing keyword research.
Find the top articles ranking for the keywords preferably top 3.
Contact the sites ranking in top 3 and ask for price using their contact form.
