I am pretty sure if you do a quick Google search, there are plenty of valuable guides & tools out there.

Using Ahrefs and some fundamental SERP analysis is a great way to start.
If you are doing content-writing, Frase could be an excellent additional tool.

1. Understand the search intent
2. Page loading speed/User experience
3. Using target KWs naturally in your title tags/meta
4. Using proper H1, H2, H3 tags
5. Linking to relevant pages (internal/outbound)
6. Good URL structure

...the list goes on. It's really about applying the basics correctly and seeing what works for you or not. And continue to improve from there.

Ultimately, on-page SEO is all about optimising a page's content for the users and has to be valuable or beneficial to the user.

  • Scrape your site using a tool like Screaming Frog in order to export all the URLs into a .csv/.xlsx file with the basic on-page metrics assessment like page titles, meta descriptions, H1, images alt tags, etc., regarding whether or not if they are missing, duplicate, too long, too short, etc,
  • Categorize each page regarding its content type. For example Homepage, Blog post, Category Page, Product Category, Product Page, Local Lander, Lead Gen, etc.
  • Gathered all the data from basic performance metrics for each of those URLs from both Google Analytics (GA) and Google Search Console (GSC) - This is in order to find the best/worse performance pages
    • From GA, I would gather the Number of users and sessions, Average session duration, average pages per session, the ratio of new to returning visitors, bounce rate, organic vs. paid sessions
    • From GSC, I would gather clicks, impressions, ctr, avg position, and links.
  • Conduct keyword research for each of the pages and determine whether the keyword the page is optimized for is the best and most relevant one.
  • Find related and relevant keywords to further optimized the content of each of the pages.
  • Run a Google search for each of the main keywords YOU found for each of the pages on Google and gather the data from the top 3 results showing in the SERP regarding page type, number of links, and referring domains, DA and PA.
By doing this, you should have enough information on how to proceed and implement in order to fully optimize each of the pages on any particular site.

I hope this makes sense to you, all it takes is for you to do your part and do your own research to expand on this.

I was able to hit #1 with a few of my moderate competition kw targets after I audited and optimized with SurferSEO

2. Image alt tag
3. making URL short and SEO friendly

good advice in this thread

to add: dwell time (time on site, basically) is one of the most important on-page factors

its why most sites that rank good have lots of copy and big pictures and internal links in the copy, it keeps users on the website for longer. google loves that.

so you should be looking for ways to keep users on your pages for longer.
