How to do keyword research?

Nichewolf, Semrush, Keyword Shitter with Keyword Everywhere plugin enabled. This combination and you can do anything.

People who recommend Keyword Planner to a newbie are probably living on a different planet or haven't used Keyword Planner for a few months. It doesn't work anymore, unless you have a pretty nice daily spend on Adwords. Instead of spamming your signatures, you could rather provide some value.

Also, you are a newbie and you, with all due respect, don't have much clue about keyword research. You will most likely end up with some terrible "how to" keyword, which you will not be able to rank. Do some more reading about KW research first. This is the MOST important part of SEO. If you do this wrong, then you have already failed before you have even started. So be careful.

If I had only one tool for keyword research, it would be keywordtool.io.. If I had two, it would be keywordtool.io + Semrush..

Hah, funny, I discovered it only recently, saved me time with "niche inspiration".

I think we are off topic a bit, but around 2 - 3 weeks back. Really saved me some time with Amazon browsing. I am not really a creative type. :)

Some good suggestions so far. I would also like to add ubersuggest for long tail KW's or alternative KW combos.

Yeah, I think I fell into your category.

I'm starting to do keyword research for my new site. I go on google and type in "how to" then let the autosuggest show me some suggestions in my niche, then I just take the whole phrase and plug it into semrush to see monthly search volume and CPC. Is this a good method? If the monthly search volume is less than 800 or the CPC is less than $0.50, I decide not to do the keyword. Also if the competition is too high I won't choose the keyphrase either.
