Ok so being new here I thought I'd just straight into the deep end here and make you all angry with my post title, but don't be mad there is a point to this all and I can guarantee you'll get some worth out of it. I didn't expect this to be so long but I think what I've written here sums up my last (6 or so) years on the IM side of things on some key points to what I've learnt, mainly to do with social media. I have read through a lot of posts on this youtube section (man you guys can be mean to eachother - although some of it merited but that's neither here nor there.) So what's this post about? The all to common questions that seem to be prevailing not only on these forums but I'm hearing everywhere: (This isn't limited to youtube its basically everywhere, but ill stay on topic) How to I build a channel? What's the best niche? How do I get featured/ trending? How do I make big money on youtube? What's the newest trick for youtube ranking? and so on... So basically I want us all to just take a step back for a second and I know we hear this all the time and we despise hearing it (even writing this is making me cringe a little) but... CONTENT IS KING Yeah so thanks for stating the obvious titan... well hold on because I'm building to a point - perhaps a long one. (It sure was... haha but I guarantee the read is worth it) I found myself in this position plenty of times, how can I fast track my success because lets be honest, who doesn't want to do that? Well I've been in this game a long time and I've had a lot of success and I've had more failures. (although without the failures I wouldn't have had more success and with more success I wouldn't have had the next failure... vicious cycle I know, but welcome to IM and if you're not prepared to lose A LOT of the time, go get a safe job. But you're here to get away from the normality of life and want to live on your terms so here we go... When it comes to becoming successful and building a Channel (I call it your brand) there is something I would say is even more important than content, and that is... COMMON SENSE Lets think of these vehicles (facebook, youtube... social media, you get it) as what they are. Businesses designed to make themselves money - not you. But wait you mean youtube and facebook don't have my best interests at heart? Well yes (and the yes equals the no anyway) and no, they are interested in keeping you interested. read that again if you have to. Because they've used their common sense and realised, well if us the sheeple aren't interested in what's going on in the world of social media, well then their interest (pun intended) goes down. So let me make it a little bit clearer. I'll even use a story. There was a time where someone discovered gold on their land (this is youtbe, google, fb etc) so they've thought, brilliant "we've struck gold" (last pun I swear) so then they had the next dilemma, we've got gold, great but it's in the ground and its doing us no good being there. So one of the land owners exclaims, great lets start panning and selling the gold! Everyone rejoices, gets excited and pull out their shovels, pans, designs wooden cradles and has a great old day preparing. They forage a small amount of gold and realise, this is harder than we thought, we can't possibly make enough money doing this ourselves. Well the land owner yells out lets start hiring more people so we can get all the gold, everyone rejoices and they meet again a week later. Still not much progress has been had, more gold has been stolen and the union workers wanted more money so they went on strike and the land owner ends up losing money paying wages. From out of the shadows, a young man emerges with a cloak over his head and clears his throat. The land owner freaks out and hits him with a shovel exclaiming “what’re you doing in my house you creep”.. just kidding, creative juices started flowing and I forgot the point of the story for a second. Where was I, oh yeah…. The young man (think me) clears his throat and has an ever so slight grin on his face says, I know the way for this to work. The land owner become one of the richest men in Australia and never worked on the gold fields again. So what happened you ask? The young boy ran into town one morning claiming he’d found the biggest gold deposit and was now rich and sold all the gold they had found in one day. Obviously word got around and people started giving up their jobs as stablemen, tailors, bankers to search for their chance at the possibility of riches from the gold fields. Each and every man(Think whoever is trying to make it on IM) paid their life savings to the land owner to search for gold on his fields. Of course some of these men who traded everything for the chance become rich finding gold become wealthier than they ever dreamed and some men never found a thing. Now there’s further stories within this saying why some of these men made money and some didn’t but that’s for another time. I like to think of these big players as the house (gambling lingo – because we really are essentially gambling here) and we’re the players. The casino isn’t set up to make us money, its setup to make the house money. But we have the secret, we’re loading the deck with jacks and we’re just waiting to capitalise. So this brings me to how do we make this work? When we realise that they’re getting 99% of the pie, and we’re getting the crumbs that’s when we can assioate this whole thing for what it is. But guess what, it’s a BIIIGGGG pie and the crumbs are the sizes of our fists and hey, someone’s got to get some of those crumbs so why not us? So how do you build a channel? First things first, read read and read again. Learn from what other people have posted about what works and more importantly 90% of the posts on here are about people complaining that they pissed their money away on something. So you read that post, write down what they did and never fucking do it, simple. (I’ve been that guy who has thrown away their money plenty of times, but it doesn’t always end badly so don’t be upset if I’ve struck a nerve. Live learn and move on) If someone does share something that works, on a public forum well guess what, perhaps it still works but soon it won’t, thank you to those people though, you guys are the true heros and what makes these places great! (Just ask yourself this, if you knew how to continuously get trending, constant subs and money from a technique, would you share it? Unlikely) Test, test and test again, try everything if it doesn’t work, good, you’ve just added another way that doesn’t work to you list. (This list is becoming priceless) – think when you were a child, you couldn’t walk for a long time and you kept trying and trying – do you think your parents said when you failed trying to do it and fell on you squishy little head a few times, move on you’re just never going to be a walker do something else. Well actually no mum and dad I’ve attempted this four times I’ve got an odd shaped head from when I fell on it but I’m not giving up. Where’s that drive gone? Bring it back. How do I build a channel? Well you just fuckin build it, how do you know how to do something if you’ve never even tried. Yes a guide makes it easier, so as I stated before, read read and read and take the time to go through every single page of the youtube (and any social media for that fact) backend and learn all the pages and everything about it. What’s the best niche? The best niche is something you’re excited about, not fuckin elsa and ana videos just because they seem to be the hot thing right now, how any adult can bring themselves to go through that I don’t know (to those of you who do, kudos but you probably don’t like playing with barbies all day, then again maybe you do? I don’t judge, just happy you're doing something you love) Pick something that you can get up every day and be happy to do a little research about, learn whats new with it and you get excited thinking of new ideas for, because that will be more powerful than any popular niche. (On a side note, there’s literally no such thing as a niche that’s too small, the smaller the niche, the more the person is willing to spend on products. In this case the more engaged they’ll be. 1million subs is great but if your engagement and interaction is shite house, then numbers don’t matter. I’d take 10,000 solid fully engaged fans than a million not really that engaged or caring fans.) How do I get featured or trending? Well I’m willing to bet this also is no secret. Now I’m no expert in the youtube algorithm but, for instance, with vimeo, the staff will pick good videos to feature. Facebook has a human inspect and approve or disapprove every advertisement placed (If one of your ads doesn’t work, just keep putting it in until you get a person who either, doesn’t give a crap or thinks it doesn’t break and t&cs) So I’m willing to bet there is a team to choose (albeit it from a computer generated list of videos) of what gets featured. What if someone pulls a Tyler Durden and hides penises in their cuts? They can't have that stuff being automatically posted (Don’t get any ideas anyone! Haha) This brings me to the new algorithm, everyone is so upset about this new algorithm stopping videos being forcefully put to the trending list, but whether this is bad or not depends how you look at it. Option A: No one can force their stuff to be featured any more so now I have more of a chance Option B: This is a new opportunity for me to figure the way to do it Option C: There still is a way, but no one will share it and its so unfair, why me How do I make big money from youtube? If you’re asking this question and want answers, look around you. How do people make big money from anything? You become one of the best at it. If you can’t see that happening I can save you a long time of hassle and just quit now. What’s the newest trick? Who knows? I sure don’t but I guarantee you there’s always a way. So when it comes to starting your channel (and all social media) think from three point of views: 1: The Big Dog: You’re the owner of youtube, what would you put as trending, what would you give favourable help to, what content would you get out there to help build your business and keep the… 2: Viewers: This is one of the most important things, because even if its shit, but people want to see it, youtube will put it out there because it accomplishes their main goal, keeping the interest. So you’re watching your channel and videos/ content from someone else’s perspective – be honest and very critical are you even interested in your content or is it time your rethink your… 3: Content: When it comes to your own content, you have two options, post what they want to see, or post something you’re passionate about and wouldn’t care if you had 10 views on it because it’s something that you enjoy. And guess what if you enjoy it, I’m sure there are others out there who do also. Anyway guys, thought I’d just give a little something back, if anyone is interested in starting some sort of a closed facebook group to bounce some ideas around and think of new game plans, I’m more than happy to start one, just reply on here or shoot me through a PM or something.
