how much do homeless people make?

I've given money to homeless and even a girl at a gas station who said she didn't have enough for gas. Her car was at one of the pumps so I gave her $20.

I felt good about it and then I started wondering if I had just gotten scammed. My good feeling went away and I started to become angry.

I gave my mom a call and told her the story as it was really eating at me. She gave me some advice that is not only spot on but something that brought back the good feeling I initially had.

"It doesn't matter whether you were "scammed" or not. It doesn't matter if a homeless person goes and buys food or drugs with the money you give."

"What matters is that every single one of us need something, whether it's bread to fill our stomachs or even drugs to dull the pain. The fact is that no matter what they use that money for they certainly (in the case of the girl at the gas station) made an effort and worked to get it."

"That girl at the gas station may have scammed you, then again she may have been completely honest."

"Think about it this way. Had she approached someone other than you she may have been grabbed, dragged into an alley, raped and killed and that's regardless of whether she was scamming or not."

(BTW, the girl was maybe 5'1" and 90 pounds in full coat and sweaters.)

"Either give from the heart because you want to and it makes you feel good to believe in the better aspects of human nature and go on with your life."

"If you're going to second guess yourself each time then don't give. It's not for you to decide what someone needs the money for, whatever it is, the fact remains that they need the money for something. Whatever that need is should not concern you, you give because you want to help and not to feel high and mighty and decide what another person should or shouldn't do or need. Otherwise it wouldn't be a selfless act of kindness."

Sorry for the long post, just something I never forgot and never will. If that makes me a sucker then so be it.

I've read a story about some regular girl who pretended she was homeless and needed money for a bus far to some place that would cost ~ $150. I remember hearing she was making around that everyday just sitting on the corner with a sign.

I've almost been trapped like that one day. I was at the train station and a girl (ugly, it helps to say no) who asked for 20€ for a train to go back at home.

I thought a few minutes about it, but then i politly declined and which her good luck : naive cunt i am !

3 weeks later, same event occured, same person, same bs story, but i remembered her. Well, let's say i spoiled her next hours. She was insiting so i yelled at her saying that i remember her and she should get a real job. She was so ashamed and me so happy cause many heard it ;)

Your mother totally p0wned you. :D

The good money is for them who outsource it to kids. That's the reason we should never give money to these kids, as we make them slaves.

Some of them make a lot! I used to work at a retail store many years back and there was this homeless man who would beg outside a nearby liquor store and then come to my store each day to change it for bigger bills, and I didn't mind cuz it saved us trips to the bank for change (even though our bank was right across from us lol).

The most I've changed for him was when he came in one day early at 1pm to change $140. He said it was a very good day and he wanted to switch it out to bills cuz he had a feeling there was a lot more coming. (back then, that was already double my days wage!)

Well, I saw a dude that was begging for money on a corner and few minutes later got in his mercedes and left... so yeah

Most homeless are drug addicts or alcoholics in my country. They might make a lot of money begging but drugs are expensive.

you could make a killing if you know where to beg, lol
like the comicon for example, you could easily of made 50 to 100 an hour that weekend if you found some good spots around the convention center

great method, now lets scale it up.

We can outsource this to some filipionos and get them imported to our country and pay them couple of $'s per day.

Actually mafia groups are already doing this. They buy off kids from romania, and then use them to beg or pickpocket. There were some reports on this on tv recently (i think it was about beggar's infulence zones war in venice...)

There was a lady that got busted in Toronto a few years ago. She was pretending to be homeless and was pulling in over 100k a year.

There is a guy from my city who is homeless. There was a fire and his wife and child died. He lost his mind basically and now lives on the streets and barely talks to anyone. When he does talk, it doesn't make much sense. He urinates in the streets and on vehicles, he even defecates in parking lots.

He doesn't actually beg, he just stands near you and doesn't go away until you give him money, and his smell forces you to give him money so he goes away faster. And when you do give him money, he bothers you again the next day.

He has around $100,000 cash in the bank (people have grabbed his bank statements when he leaves an atm to check his balance). He doesn't require money. I have seen this man sit for days in front of my shop, and seen where he sleeps outside. He doesn't spend anything. He gets food from generous people + garbage cans + food bank. I don't even remember ever seeing him smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol or do drugs. He is just simply checked out.

No idea what all the money is for. Maybe some relatives, or charity, or hope for a future.

Just a random story. You can usually tell a truly homeless person by their dirty teeth and body odor. If they are homeless, they should smell like sweat and probably urine. I usually give a $5 or $10 to homeless people that don't look like drug addicts, especially young homeless people.

If they spend the money on drugs, I cant blame them for a second. They obviously needed the money more than I did.
