How important is Plagiarism in SEO?

So I have a site that sometimes we post a study or research done on certain things and I just found out that there are other sites showing almost same content we have, even though (and as far as a recall) we changed the content from the actual study (used Copyscape to find this), so my question is how important is plagiarism for SEO? the page that have similar content as some other site is not ranking. I'm thinking to hit the whole site with copyscape and see what happens, need advise from the SEO experts here, please help. If unique content is very important then we need to fix the whole site content.

if it would be so easy to rank on google with scraped content than everybody would do it, sooner or later you are going to get a penalty

I stopped using Copyscape and switched to Quetext Pro, costs $10 a month and it picks up a lot more than Copyscape does.

To be honest, copyscape did not show the similar content before, out of sudden in the last few days- one week, they have been showing moreand more similar contents, hmmm, are they trying to make more money?
