James2, this is exactly what I meant with my post above.
And yes, I do say thanks when I receive a gift or any form of help and I do the same on the forums UNLESS I'M ASKED FOR IT. I read a method, case study or whatever and get some value out of it, then scroll down to hit the rep and thanks buttons and see in bold and capital letters "PRESS THE THANKS BUTTON".. I don't do it then and it's the same in real life, if someone has to ask for a "thanks", they really don't deserve it in my opinion.

You can see this especially in the Downloads section ;-) Good point.. I do the same always. Everyone should do it too. Afterall, the OP isn't gonna b paid for this. It will only encourage him/her to post more useful stuffs.

Well my rep is nowhere here but my thanks probably shapes up okay.

Information sharing is what is paramount.

In my experience on internet forums (which is sadly substantial), quality tends to dilute where members perceive a "reward" for posting.

We all have different interests on a forum as diverse as this one and that's a good thing rather than a bad thing. If someone likes your post you WILL get thanks and/or rep according to you meeting their needs.

That's how it should be.

James - It all depends on the person. One can't force or make someone to do it. I recently had a giveaway of $50 LinkedIn ads coupon, after PM'in the coupon to the member, he never even replied back to me (On top of that got banned after 1-2 weeks later). I honestly didn't even care about a 'thank', but that's how some people are!

Wiz has said the right thing. Do not ask for thanks. That is the right way to go. What I do personally is, just ask for "Response", not "Thanks" or "reps". It does pay off sometimes

I try to ALWAYS give thanks for useful info, I do forget once in a while, but not often.
As I want the poster to know I appreciate his or her info.

Actually, it's probably worth making another point.

If you're making good quality posts you are more likely to attract interest from other forum members and perhaps find yourself getting invited into projects etc and enjoying some mutual collaboration/sharing of skills etc.

That's where the true value of good posts can be found.

Yes politeness is important and a good trait.

A lot of new people don't realize the importance of thanking or repping someone for a useful post. I personally think the lack of people giving thanks and rep just makes it that much more special. The worst thing that people do is to ask for thanks and rep though that really bugs me.

I just thanked and +repped all of you that I could(actually ran out of rep/thankjuice early!)

Age old problem in just about every forum on the net that support virtual rewarding. People have different thresholds of "thanks", ya get what ya get. Everyone is subject to the same group of users so increasing the amount of thanks doesn't really increase the value of a thanks. I'd say the thanks volume is pretty decent here on BHW as is. The quality of our members here are by far above the average run of the mill blackhat forum.

I think it just slips most peoples minds after they read a post. I know to hit "thanks" when someone wrote a very intelligent and well researched post or reply, but others might not see that little button on the far left hand side?
