How google work?

Hello Guys,

I was just wondering how google even work. I mean how does some people outrank amazon or ebay? For some keywords say, "best microwaves", the first place may be taken by a niche site,the second place by amazon. How the hell it works?
Most of the the time, for product keywords (microwaves, shavers, etc) I see amazon in the first page but not the first place. I can't understand how google works. Any one care to explain?

Because their page is most likely better optimised than that specific Amazon page. Not to mention they build better backlinks, some Amazon pages might get some natural backlinks but I imagine it wouldn't be much unless it's a popular item.

Does that mean even if I see a keyword with first page dominated by amazon, walmart, ebay (and some others), I can still outrank them given that my on-page seo is optimised properly?

Yes, but only for a specific niche.
