How do search engines decide which websites rank higher
if only we knew this...
But it's usually a mix of these things, and others that we don't know about:
- content quality
- user interaction with your site (ie. how much time people spend on your site reading, scrolling, clicking on stuff, and interacting with it in general)
- backlinks (the more you have of them, and the better they are, and the more carefully and safely they are built, the higher you can rank)
- trust signals (nobody knows exactly how many trust signals there are, but we can guess some of them)
- social media signals and presence
- brand popularity
- technical SEO (ie. how fast your site is, how intuitive and easy to navigate is, how error-free it is, whether or not it's mobile friendly, how crawlable it is, etc.)
And god-knows how many more signals there are, but at some point there were over 2000 (yes, 2 THOUSAND) of them, someone said. I don't remember who it was, and I didn't fully believe him regardless, but I know that there are a lot of signals and things you need to pay attention to, in order to rank in google.
And the worst part of this? Google randomizes the crap out of everything and when they're bored (which is once every month or every 2-3 months) they shuffle the results, just to confuse and piss us even more.
So, if you wish to get into SEO be prepared for a rollercoaster of mind-fuckery and constant ups and downs and out of blue penalties that make no sense, but also magical spikes of traffic after 1 year of your site being nowhere, and everything in between...
PS: sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm NOT an expert, I only told you what I've noticed from the SEO I've done in the past (over 5 years ago), and what I've noticed from other members of the forum who - in their kindness - throw a bone to chew to people like me

...
But on a serious note though, my reply is not totally pulled out of my ass. These are indeed some of the most important ranking factors nowadays. Whether you want to believe me or not, I don't care. I actually think it's best that you've tested it yourself, as the ranking process many times depends on the niche you're in and the keywords you're targeting. So, even if the experts tell you how to rank in google, their advice might not apply to your niche and keywords, so you still have to test stuff at some point
