Hi
I keep hearing about SEO everywhere, but I’m still confused about how it really works. How do search engines decide which websites rank higher, and what are the main factors that actually influence rankings?

Would appreciate a clear explanation from the experts here.

How do search engines decide which websites rank higher
if only we knew this...

But it's usually a mix of these things, and others that we don't know about:

- content quality
- user interaction with your site (ie. how much time people spend on your site reading, scrolling, clicking on stuff, and interacting with it in general)
- backlinks (the more you have of them, and the better they are, and the more carefully and safely they are built, the higher you can rank)
- trust signals (nobody knows exactly how many trust signals there are, but we can guess some of them)
- social media signals and presence
- brand popularity
- technical SEO (ie. how fast your site is, how intuitive and easy to navigate is, how error-free it is, whether or not it's mobile friendly, how crawlable it is, etc.)

And god-knows how many more signals there are, but at some point there were over 2000 (yes, 2 THOUSAND) of them, someone said. I don't remember who it was, and I didn't fully believe him regardless, but I know that there are a lot of signals and things you need to pay attention to, in order to rank in google.

And the worst part of this? Google randomizes the crap out of everything and when they're bored (which is once every month or every 2-3 months) they shuffle the results, just to confuse and piss us even more.

So, if you wish to get into SEO be prepared for a rollercoaster of mind-fuckery and constant ups and downs and out of blue penalties that make no sense, but also magical spikes of traffic after 1 year of your site being nowhere, and everything in between...

PS: sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm NOT an expert, I only told you what I've noticed from the SEO I've done in the past (over 5 years ago), and what I've noticed from other members of the forum who - in their kindness - throw a bone to chew to people like me :p ...

But on a serious note though, my reply is not totally pulled out of my ass. These are indeed some of the most important ranking factors nowadays. Whether you want to believe me or not, I don't care. I actually think it's best that you've tested it yourself, as the ranking process many times depends on the niche you're in and the keywords you're targeting. So, even if the experts tell you how to rank in google, their advice might not apply to your niche and keywords, so you still have to test stuff at some point :)

Search engines look at relevance + authority. Keywords in content, quality backlinks, user experience, and site speed all matter. Think of it as a mix of “useful content” + “trusted site.”

You can find static info all over the internet. The logic behind these ranking signals is that users prefer one type of websites or one type of content over others. The search engines study these pointers and evolve over time. Sometimes search engines like Google prefer sites like wikipedia, pinterest, and reddit to scrape data to feed their algo or AI. So, a lot of factors influence the ranking. We can't specify exactly what makes a site rank. The ranking signals you find everywhere is just generic data that serves as foundation for ranking. Search engines consider many smaller signals and keep updating existing signals based on their UX data.

Greater the number of good backlinks pointing to your website, more are chances of ranking.

Still a lot more complex than that. :D

Hehe, we offer sacrifice to the god Google and pray that we're blessed with #1 ranking for generations to come. :D

It’s how you get Google (and other search engines) to notice your website and put it near the top when people search.
They use super-smart algorithms to figure out which sites are the best answer for what people want.
SEO is about being popular AND helpful. Google wants to show users the best stuff, so make your site that “best”!

Search engines rank pages like judges in a contest they score based on relevance (content + intent match), authority (backlinks/mentions), and experience (speed, mobile, UX, security). Technical SEO makes sure your site is crawlable, while strong content and links prove you deserve visibility.

SEO work by search engines analyzing content, links, and user signals to judge relevance and authority. Strong content, good site structure, and quality backlinks are the main factors that help sites rank higher.

Imagine that Google is a librarian who has to find you the most useful book out of billions. How does he decide what to give you?

  • Content - your page should answer the user's question. Be comprehensive, clear, and to the point. Google now understands this through neural networks, not just keywords as before.
  • Links: if other sites link to your site, it's like a recommendation. The more authoritative the recommending site, the more weight it carries.
  • Technique: the site should load quickly, look good on a phone, and not crash. It's basic but critical.
  • User behavior - if people visit your page and immediately leave, Google thinks the content is crap.
  • Authority - especially important in medicine and finance. Google checks who the author is and whether they have credentials.
  • In reality, the algorithm takes into account 200+ factors, but these are the main ones.
Practical advice: start with content. Write 10 really useful articles on your topic, make sure the site works properly, and you'll already be better than 80% of your competitors.

SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Results take at least 3-6 months.

they rank pages mainly on how relevant and valuable the content is to users

That is based on number of backlinks. Their quality also matter.

Google has some parameters based on which it decided which site will rank above. Manipulating those parameters is done in seo. If you follow their guidelines, it is whitehat seo. If you use tricks, it is blackhat SEO.

Seo is super important to websites because it will drive in organic traffic to your website which will increase your website popularity and generate you money through ads.

Beyond that, they also consider how well your site performs. Is it fast? Is it easy to use on any device? A good user experience keeps people happy, and that's a positive signal.

SEO is like a race, search engines pick winners by checking who gives the best answers, fastest speed, and most trust to users.

SEO works by helping search engines understand your site better. You rank higher when your content is useful, your site loads fast, and other trusted sites link to you.

SEO works by helping search engines determine which sites best meet users’ needs. Key factors include high-quality content, strong user engagement, authoritative backlinks, and solid technical SEO like site speed and mobile-friendliness. Trust, brand signals, and niche relevance also play a role.

There are hundreds of ranking signals, and Google constantly updates its algorithms, so the best approach is consistent, high-quality content, user-focused design, and safe link-building. Focus on these, test, and adapt that’s how sites steadily gain visibility.
