I don't know a lot about blogging or SEO cause I've mainly been in the cpa and direct linked traffic game up until now. However I heard about this John Chow guy that apparently makes over 500k a year from his blog. So I checked out his blog, and realized that the guy lives across the street from me, and I see him almost everyday walking with his daughter/grand-daughter in the park. From my understanding he makes his $40,000 a month profits by ranking high with the "make money online" keywords and monetizing the site with ads and selling his ebook? Is that correct?

It's not something you can do overnight but if you build up a huge following and get some serious mindshare going, a blog can turn you into a millionaire.
Success with anything online hinges heavily on traffic. Get lots of it to a decent website/blog and you'll be rolling in it.
Other good examples to follow are Perez Hilton and Icanacheezburger (not sure about spelling). Check them out for some inspiration.

Most of his money comes from his backend. his email list makes about 60% of his income, and the rest is mainly advertising. He's capatalized on every inch of space on that blog of his.
He's pretty open too, I've talked to him a few times. I'd say go up and say hello.

Read his blog, read his book and find out for yourself. He is pretty transparent about how he makes money. That is the point of his blog.

When I started blogging I picked him to emulate, as he's obviously done well at it. After all I had to introduce myself and tell him where MY site was!

I don't know how old you are, so even if it is your parents house, is it the kind of house that people who make half a million dollars a year would live in?

Some people don't need the big house or fancy cars. Perfect example is Warren Buffett, he is a billionaire but still lives in the same house he bought around 30 years ago.

I know people that make 200k a year and live in a crappier house than i do...
(my whole family makes about 50k/year)

John Chow started blogging along time ago during the dot com age. He had a technical review site for electronics or something, was offered like $2m for it and passed, then the dot com bust. I still think he has that blog. As posted here most his $$ come from his list hes built over the years. He is always sending me at least 1 or 2 offers a week. Hes legit as far as I can see.

I've seen him walk towards a complex where there are apartments and townhouses, so I'm guessing he has an apartment, perhaps a penthouse. I live in Richmond, its about 10 minutes from Vancouver (which is like the most expensive city to own a house) and prices in Richmond are even higher. The house I live in is worth 1 million and it's pretty tiny. In order to have a mansion or something that stands out you need to spend at least 4-5 million. And I've seen houses for sale in the nice areas near the ocean for over 25 million. So you need to make more than 500k a year to afford that. Plus there's a lot of rich young Asians who have parents that are corrupt politicians in China, businessmen and large landowners. So I see a bunch of 17 year old kids driving r8s and Lamborghini's. So it's hard to tell if makes that much a year, probably does
