How does Google know content is good or bad?

Google have their own algorithm to detect the content.

Stop spreading bullshit....manual rating it's impossible because the web is huge....they barely have resources to crawl the web and keep up with its expansion....they only manual rate websites flagged for child pornography and some high risk niches like politics and elections, pharma, loans etc.
It's surprising to me the number of people on the Internet and more specifically in the SEO industry that don't know Google has(or had) people (outsourced) who rate search engine result pages. They are/were known as Quality Raters. They work with agencies whom Google hires to do the job. In fact, a while a Google a document containing details of their activities or guidelines, was leaked and was even briefly discussed here on the forum.

But somehow, I'm the one spreading bullshit.

If someone can hack your account and make money from the AdSense, a multi billion dollar company with the smartest people that can't even compete with openai.

Googles obsessed about brand loyalty, and detecting good or bad content, lol as they put it we will not delete your content we may delete your account but you can use as much as our storage as you want it's infinite.

They have their parameters to judge this. Like suppose a viewer comes on one of your articles on website, how much time he spent there is an indication of how good is content. Another ranking factor are backlinks. So, you need to take care of that also.

Google's algorithms evaluate content quality using a variety of criteria. While it is true that Google prefers high-quality material, how it evaluates quality is complex.

The algorithms consider factors such as user engagement (e.g., bounce rate, time on page), keyword relevancy, content structure, and the existence of authoritative backlinks, They also utilize machine learning models to determine factual correctness and relevancy, frequently cross-referencing with other credible sources.

We know that they have manual raters but only for really high risk niches......not for every niche...this is the bullshit.

On an algorithmic level, Google utilizes several signals to understand if content is valuable or not, like topical relevancy, keyword clustering, and authoritative citations.

What a lot of people disregard is that Google bases your content on a website's reputation more than the content itself.

This opinion is formed by evaluating user behaviour, EAT signals, and
links that cite your content for a resource.

In blackhat SEO, you can build authority content not by just writing it well but by manufacturing the signals Google
wants to see that align your copyright with trust.

Google uses a combination of algorithms and human evaluators to determine the quality and relevance of content .google check your content with there keywords ,link equity google evaluates the quality and quantity of link pointing to the content,it check by uses experience,by content quality, by content updates, by machine learning and technical optimization etc. By use this factors google can determine the quality and relevance of content.

People always said "Just build quality content and you will rank, because Google like good content", how does Google know? How can they tell if my article is full with facts or just false infomations.

Why am I asking this? Because during my time doing SEO, I see full of shitty content ranks for high volume keywords just because the site has a lot of powerful backlinks.

UX is the answer

Google judges content based on factors like relevance, user engagement, and quality signals. It looks at things like keyword usage, readability, and how well the content answers user queries. Feedback from real users and authoritative sites also plays a big role.

Google judges content by how relevant, trustworthy, and useful it is to users, plus how well it’s linked and presented.

The algorithms check for E-E-A-T (proof of experience and authority), topic completeness, and adherence to technical excellence. Crucially, Google uses user signals to judge actual value—pages with low bounce rates, high time-on-site, and high organic CTR are deemed "good" because users prefer them. Low-quality content is characterized by superficial AI generation, link spam, and high pogo-sticking (users quickly returning to search results).

That is the ultimate question that divides everyone in SEO, man. You’re seeing the reality: backlinks and domain authority still dominate for highly competitive terms. The people who say "just create good content" are usually selling something, or they only work in tiny, low-competition niches.

Google doesn't "read" for truth like a human. It determines quality through a few calculated metrics. The biggest one is Authority. If a bunch of highly trusted sites are pointing to your 'low-quality' article, Google assumes that article is the reliable source—that's the Trust Signal.

They also rely heavily on User Signals. If your article ranks, and people click it, stay on the page (low bounce rate), and don't immediately search for the same thing again, Google assumes your content solved their query. So, quality, to Google, is often just a combination of Authority + User Satisfaction. You see junk ranking because authority often overpowers content quality.

Google doesn't know if content is true or false in a philosophical sense. It determines "quality" by measuring signals that correlate with human satisfaction and trust.

The primary signal is user interaction data (clicks, dwell time, bounce rate, pogo-sticking). If people click your result and immediately hit the back button, that's a strong "bad content" signal. If they stay, scroll, and visit other pages, that's a "good content" signal. Google uses this to continuously re-rank pages.

Secondary signals include link velocity and source authority. A site like Mayo Clinic gets an automatic "trust" weighting because it's a known entity. A new site needs to build that trust through consistent, user-validated content and mentions from other trusted sources (co-citations, not just links).

This is why "shitty content" with powerful backlinks can rank. Those links are a massive trust signal that temporarily outweighs poor user metrics. But over time, if the user engagement is bad, Google will demote it. The backlinks just bought it time in the spotlight.

To game this, focus on maximizing user engagement per session, not just word count. Use clear formatting, internal links to related content, and fast loading. This gives Google positive behavioral signals, which is the real ranking factor.
