How do you promote your music?

Hi guys! My best friend has recently uploaded his music to cdbaby. He has really good music but the thing is he needs to promote it. Cd Baby helps to get the music in all stores but how do you get the people to buy the music? Any ideas? He would like to get to an international audience (we live in south america) and don't have the money to travel and have some gigs in other countries. I was thinking about writing to music review sites but I guess they charge a fee. What other ideas would be useful for promoting music?

Yeah, we have a Facebook page but haven't thought about Twitter or Youtube. Thanks for the advice!

Numerous people and bands have become famous by posting some free videos on Youtube. If your best friend is talented, he/she will get noticed. One example that immediately comes to mind is Justin Bieber. Like him or not, Youtube is where he built a following and first got noticed.
