I searched previous threads to see if this had been asked, but couldn't seem to find anything related.

I'm curious to know the process some of you guys use to select products to dropship. I know AliExpress is a popular site used for dropshipping and it seems looking for products with a high number of orders and sellers with a good reputation is a popular strategy. Some people say they use their own intuition to determine which products they think would sell well.

Any constructive input would be helpful!

    Thanks

When i did dropshipping i looked at trends in the niche, so i joined other store newsletters under a different name, also joined ebay newsletter , forums etc.
If you know your niche then it should come naturally, it's just research, research and more research

I sell the same stuff I would anyway, but my AliExpress dropshippers can provide free shipping while I can't.

Did you see a difference in sales for the products you sold vs. the dropshipped ones?

Check to see which are the hot sellers on Amazon and Ebay and that should give you an idea!

How would you go about identifying niches where there may not be too much on Amazon and Ebay. The top-selling products on Amazon and Ebay would likely have many other competitors. I may be wrong though.

Easiest advice for dropshipping is to not look at products but to first look for a niche. After you find your niche, then it would be easy to find related products in that niche. If you first look for products that sell well, you're going about it in the wrong way. Sure, that method will work but you will spend hours and hours of researching WHAT to sell and not actually SELLING. This is pretty much true for nearly every internet marketing or physical product marketing approach. First, find a niche. Second, find a product to sell.

    Where to Start:

I recommend that you start looking for a niche related to some activity that interests you. This is best because you typically have knowledge in that niche and can identify products in that niche that would probably sell well. Maybe in your spare time or on weekends, you are out camping or fishing. Outdoor activities are great niches for finding sellable products and there are many dropshippers that have numerous items for sale.

With the camping niche, you can sell tents, sleeping bags, hammocks, camp stoves, a compass, magnesium fire starters, etc. - the list is endless and there are "low-cost" items (less than $5 USD) that you can get started with "testing" out. I stress low-cost items when getting started so that there is less risk involved. With dropshipping, you and your reputation is on the line if there are any problems with shipping delays, defective or damaged merchandise, or issues with product quality. These problems can literally kill your sales overnight with just 1 bad review or 1 item lost in the mail.

When I say "testing", this phase often gets overlooked. There are high-quality and low-quality goods available from dropshippers. I recommend that you contact sellers (Alibaba, Aliexpress, DHGate, etc.) and ask them for samples or discounts for samples. I personally do this so that I get to inspect the quality of the goods that I'll be selling and so I can take my own pictures of the products. Your own pictures will make your product appear unique especially if there are other sellers with the same items for sale.

Now, it is time to decide how you want to sell the items. Will you be selling on eBay? Will you be selling on Amazon? Will you be selling on your own webstore? There is often plenty of competition regardless of what platform you choose to sell on so you will need to be creative if you plan to be successful. Personally, I recommend selling on both eBay and on Amazon. After making a few sales, you may wish to create an online webstore so that you can offer discounts to returning customers and eventually sell more products.

I believe every niche has it's own value. I know someone who makes $5k/month by selling sticky pads only. Just make sure your products will reach to the target audiences :)

I think it is agreat informative conversation going on here. I usually sell the products which I actually have. I didn't really have good luck with dropshipping especially when the source is overseas. The costumer is usually upset at least for the shipping time. I am really curious about how you manage such problems.
    Thanks

Awesome tips! Out of the sources you mentioned (Alibaba, Aliexpress, DHGate, etc.), which places have you had the most success finding quality sellers and products?

Which suppliers have you used in the past? For most people who are drop shipping off of AliExpress they mostly list products that ship via ePacket. The shipping times for ePacket aren't that great but better than your standard free shipping options.

In my opinion, Aliexpress offers competitive pricing for small numbers of goods (i.e. - less than 10 of something) with the free shipping option. It makes it a low barrier to entry for getting started in the dropship game. You are typically just purchasing 1 or 2 of something and having it sent to your customers on whatever selling platform you decide to use. If you can keep the costs down, you can earn really well from this method.

When you dropship, it is also very important to monitor your suppliers for changes in price of goods. Some of this can change daily so be aware of this. A good rule of thumb is that if you find a supplier with the quality of goods you like plus they are quick at processing and shipping your orders, make sure and forge a tight relationship with them. Often times if you purchase an item at a certain price and the next time you order it the price has increased, send them an email and tell them that you previously purchased the item for less and they will honor that lower price. I have many suppliers that I have been using for over 5 years!

Another good idea is to first identify your target market and then select a supplier that will deliver to that market for the lowest cost and in the fastest manner possible. Example: say that you are selling camping gear on eBay in the US market. It may benefit you to find a dropshipper that send the goods from a US based warehouse but purchases the items in bulk directly from China using Alibaba. This option may have a higher product cost and/or shipping cost but your items will usually arrive faster and in better shipping condition than those that just come from overseas.
