How do you gain motivation to work?

I just see at the lamborghini on my desktop

Looks like we share the same attitude towards concentration on work. When this happens to me, I simply shutdown all distractions. Then, for 5 minutes to 10 minutes I would think about what happen to my goals if I don't do the work, and what results should I get if I finished what needs to be done.

This is how I learned setting long-term and short-term goal. I have daily short-term goal that supports my long-term goals. Making a list of what to do and obliging myself to finish it on time, keeps me motivated. Of course, I have to make my goals realistic.

I wish I had done this before, but it's not too late to begin :)

1) look at your wife, makes u wanna run outta the house and to work

2) the look at your kids face when you have to feed them and buy for them

3) the materialistic and spiritual things u can do with $$$

I seem to be falling along the same lines, I actually made an appointment with a doc and see if I can get some happy pills. I will let you know what happens ;)

It sounds to me like you might have ADD or ADHD I was diagnosed as a child but my parents never would put me on meds. Six months ago I decided to go and get tested myself and was put on meds that have changed my life I am 1000 times more able to focus and get things done. It has improved all areas of my life not just work. My relationships have improved my over all health has improved everything has improved.

Dude, I feel like I have ADD or ADHD too. I have a very bad lack of focus.
Even when I'm entertaining myself such as watching videogame trailors, I start to stare blank at the video and not pay attention to it.. Is that ADD?
And when I work, it's hard for me to concentrate. I can only work for a good hour or so and it really stresses me out since I can't go long doing the same thing.
Even videogames, I can't seem to keep playing the same game for more than an hour because I feel like I've soaked in too much entertaiment then I lay on my bed and do nothing at all. I need to know if I've got lack of focus..
Haven't been diagnosed or tested. I'm noticing a huge slip in my grades because I don't know most of the material from lack of attention.

I'm not really motivated by the goals I want to achieve. Sure, I'd love an endless stream of money, a big house, expensive car etc. but I guess I'm just motivated by a desire to learn. One of the biggest reasons I hang around this forum is too learn. When I'm working on a project, I'm happiest when I have no idea what I'm doing. I guess it puts me in a better position to learn what I need and apply that knowledge without feeling like I'm working on something repetitive.

Quick tip: If you feel like you have a lack of focus through not understanding what to work on first then write a list of everything you need to do, but make all the goals small so it'll be easier for you. If you're lacking focus because you can't concentrate then switch off all distractions and put a small object like a coin in front of you and just stare at it for a while, you might feel the urge to jump up every now and again but everytime you resist that urge concentrating will be become easier for you.

Thank you for all the responses. I decided that negative imagery may help me; I visualise what I could be if I do not concentrate on my work now.

Money Is Not The Best Motivator. Less costly kinds of encouragement can be far more effective. Yeah right!

I do the following:

- Watch Secret Millionaire: Makes me want to make money for more than just myself.

- Talk to my grandmother often: She was a peasant farmer from Korea who immigrated to the US after being chased out of her country. None of her kids went to college or became anything of a success and she constantly tells me how important it is for me to keep my head on straight and take my business by the horns.

- Read AskMen.com: Every section, from Fashion to Power & Money will help you become a better man, literally, and will also give you motivation.

- Wear a suit every day: The way you dress influences how you feel about yourself, and when you wear a suit, you tend to feel like the boss. When you feel like a boss, you tend to sell yourself better to potential clients and earn the respect of higher profile individuals that just may want to do business with you.

- I work out every day, even on weekends: A healthy mind is influenced by a healthy body. If I was fat and in a suit, I'd still feel like a slob, but since I have six pack abs and a V shaped upper body, I feel like a very good looking boss.

- I take pride in my looks: This sort of goes with the other ones I've mentioned. I get a manicure before every meeting/important event. I wash my face and brush my teeth twice a day. I do my hair every day and don't wear hats unless I'm on vacation. I occasionally get my teeth whitened. I like to look at myself in the mirror and see someone who takes care of themselves and potential clients prefer to do business with people who are better looking than other people as well.

I just came up with a cool idea, I'm gonna take photos of myself where I want to be
Like infront of a mansion
Wearing a nice suit with a briefcase

Having the need to buy useless stuff :D Whether you really need it or not...

Motivating yourself is one of the easiest things to do provided you understand the potential of your subconscious mind. You need to manipulate your thoughts such that your body does exactly the same way your subconscious thinks. Start talking yourself subconsciously and make it a point that all these thoughts are positive and booster. Your thoughts need to be a blend of past and future. You need motivate yourself citing the troubles you had to face in the past. Remind yourself of the hardships and promise yourself "I will work harder to avoid landing in such a situation ever". While thinking about the future. You can visualize all the beautiful things you want in your life. The list can be unending. Visualize those things which you want in a month or two and then those things which you want after few years. This will set the tone clear and you will have a clear picture. Once brain has a clear picture what exactly it wants, what exactly it needs to avoid, then things get easier. This is one of the easiest ways to motivate yourself.

My motivation... to work doing internet marketing...

Is so I don't have to work under supervisors and managers who like to flex their authority to protect their ego.

But Most importantly, I do it for the freedom. I can take a singles cruise whenever the hell I want.

Not jerking off actually builds motivation / energy / focus...it's because dopamine re-balances...too much masturbation depletes dopamine, dopamine the main chemical for motivation
Go a month without masterbation and you will be more motivated, guaranteed.

The neurotransmitter dopamine is released during and after masturbation, thus which would drive someone to be more motivated. It is also a reward driven neurotransmitter, so someone would most likely go after their goal, because the dopamine would help them see the reward after the work. - In which the example you gave, I believe not masturbating OR given any sexual stimuli which would result in arousal, would increase alertness.

So, masturbation wouldn't really deplete dopamine synaptic transmission in the brain. :P If anything, it'll elevate levels.
I think maybe too much sexual stimuli (for those who don't know, stimuli would be something that would influence activity, such as porn, sex, food, water, even a thought etc.) would flood the brain in dopamine, thus being too reward-driven, resulting in taking too many risks...

I'm a behavioral neuroscience student (and computer and information security), and a COMPLETE nerd when it comes to the brain and behavioral biology. :)
