How do you actually make money on linkedin?

Agree with above. You cannot directly monetize from LinkedIn but if you have a good B2B product then LinkedIn offers a great platform for you to pitch and generate hot leads. If targeted right, LinkedIn can provide better leads and conversion than GA or FB for B2B products.

LinkedIn hasn't led to direct sales for me, but marketing and reaching out to other professionals has helped increase me range and reach to get product out in front of more people and to wider audiences.

Linkein is a waste of time. People rarely comment on anything and rarely like. ONce in a while someone posts something that touches a nerve. Typically, these professionals on LI do not go there with the idea of buying anything. Some are too lazy to set up a blog or buy an info product or software. Most of these guys on there hire people to do the dirty work. On the positive side, linkedin is good if you are trying to impress a prospective employer who's active on LI. What I have found is that few are clickers. If they click, they provide very little conversions if any. Facebook groups are better BUT, if you make the mistake of signing up too fast and too many, stupid FB blocks you for 2 weeks. After the block, they keep an eye on your postings for spam. Most groups are spammed to death anyway. So what are you to do, create another FB or another lInkedin and bring all their users to your new gig, then you can get super rich and retire.

By advertising on groups i guess.

Also by creating an article/pulses to promote their product.
i think that is what you mean if they actually make money.

Ive been on linkedin for about 4 years and i make $$$ selling my services B2B leads.

Actually I do social media marketing.
I create ads on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. I make money by advertising businesses, brands, products, sites, etc.

You can drive traffic from your linkedin accounts to the sites of clients to earn money easily.

A clear, powerful headline that promises to deliver value to the reader counts for as much as 60% of the overall success of your blog post on LinkedIn, as headlines grab readers' attention in an increasingly crowded landscape. Use the headline to guide your content, and deliver what you would tell your best customer.

Here are my thoughts about LIN.
I am on the network for a long time, never made direct money from it but..
As LIN suppose to be a professional social network, you can use it for the following (and more):
1. Groups - there are really big groups on LIN that can be supper target to your niche - use it to grow your name/product/service and your site.
2. Magazine - There are online magazine and offline magazine in your niche, search the owner, ask to publish an article and who know where it can get you ( I did it and got nice traffic and new connection from it).
3. Product/Service - well if you have one, it can be a great place to promote it, with connections and inside target groups (as some already mention here).
4. Websites - Want a good post on a relevant niche site, search who is the owner and you can direct contact him, who know maybe you can exchange article with links....
5. Content - Ask your connection to share your content on LIN - some will do it for free, some will not.

I currently have around 4K connections, had only about 300 two month ago, I just go to my 'People you may know' and send connection requested to the list over there, I prefer to send it to people that I have more then 100 shared connection relevant to my niche or interest - I do it manually - no bot - in the morning and at night - select about 50-100 in each bulk using my mobile phone.
From time to time, I search for a company that I like or have interest in and try to connect with people in that company.

Nowadays, I use it just for connection and to share content that I like mine and others, I do NOT make money from it, but in the past been able to write to an online security magazine, promote my sites, promote a free tool that I build (fix bugs that found by people, add new features recommended by them), make connection over sea and find jobs when I needed.

Hope it help,
darklich.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Think what you could offer to a company that's already doing good business. How can you help them? What can you do for them? And whatever you do, always talk to the people in charge. If you try hard enough, you'll get through to them. No need talking to a secretary, or a PA, etc.

LinkedIn is all about B2B. Create a service that you could see a business using. SEO services, consulting, social media, etc!

I`m having success with LinkedIn. Use your smart phone and follow every person within your niche and as long as you have a website of your own or an affiliate link in the page, people will start to be interested and talk to you.
Make sure to share content on the page, that certainly helps.

Create awesome, highly qualified portfolios. Wait for recruiters... get info. Sell them B2B services for recruiting industry.
