HEY
how much time would it take for new webite to beat website like lifehacker.com in rank ?

Depends. If you don't do anything to your site it would never rank. But if your ranking against one of their pages that has no links to it, and you have lots of strong links you could beat them in 5 months. It depends

But seriously, it would take a lot of time and effort into awesome content creation and marketing in a way that will net you lots of natural links.

1 year is at minimum will take to rank as long as you do all your home work :)

If you're trying to rank for a term that isn't directly targeted by the page you're trying to outrank, or if the page you're trying to outrank is weak, it shouldn't take too long. Stronger pages will take longer. There is no clear cut answer for this, so don't listen to anyone who tries to give you one. Depends how much work you're willing to put in and how quickly you do that work.

You can't really say how long, really depends on the link. How long it has been there, how many other links were linked to it etc. But going up against authority sites like those are hard always, best bet is to pack up your bags and go to another kw

You don't have to pack your bags. Find different angles. The SEO guys call them long tails..I call them "Jesus tails". If there's only a few guys in the niche, being third or forth is just fine. Shit, I'll take 10th. There's a reason why certain niches are competitive, because they make shit tons of money...

Not enough info to judge. What keyword. How old is your site. Give us something to base the judgement on

Actually if you have a decent budget and some time it's perfectly fine to target niches that are competitive. Most of them are evergreen industries and the
payouts are great. The only reason you would see me recommending quick ranking niches is for noobs with smaller budgets getting a go at the industry.
Sooner of later you have to go for the meat and not the milk. Lifehack.com while not super simple, is not that bad to beat.

Some of it has to do with time. Let him get going now so later he has nice traffic coming in. =)

In a perspective that OP doesn't have a lot of money to spend for an SEO budget then it perfectly fits the mentality of leaving the niche. Yes there are many money making niches out there that hard but rank able, but you need the budget to do so don't you?

to some work daily improve your website and you would see result on 3 - 6 month

It will move up pretty click till under 1 million. In 3 months I went from 8 million to 3.5 million.
