My hosting was just suspended. And now the guy is asking a crazy(as he knows I was moving to godaddy) amount of money to unlock and for me to retrieve my files.
Any experiences with this and away around this?

Thanks all!

Well depends who is your host and you not suppose to tell them you moving. And don't you keep backups?

You've now learned two of the most important webhosting lessons:
1) Keep regular backups
2) Don't tell your current host you're moving

As for tips... Pay up or nothing. You're fucked either way.

If the site is wordpress, then you can upload wordpress auto back up daily plugin. And it will deliver back ups daily to your email or you can save directly on your pc.Contact their support about back up of your blog.

I have an old outdated back-up.
Just more checking about whether there was a way around for getting my files back.
But I would rather start over than pay that prick more money.
Anyway - thanks for the great responses all - much appreciated.

I don't have any help as to your original question but I would suggest you not host with Godaddy if you are going to use their shared hosting... you'll have 7,000 sites on 1 IP there.

What are the cons of having the one IP address other than if one site gets ddosed the other sites will get attacked too?

Having gambling/porn/pharma sites on your IP is not good for starters... some of the smarter guys here that have tech knowledge will be able to offer some more of the technical reasons as well.

Sadly... if you're locked out of your site, you screwed.

Of course, if he locked it without you violating his ToS and while you still had a valid agreement, depending on whether the hosting company resides in your country of residence, you may have legal recourse, including suing for breach of contract, loss of income, fraud, etc.

A strongly worded letter from an attorney may also open doors - if you have no other options. Might be worth a try.

I've heard the same horror stories. Sadly, in an effort to bring down cost, they must reduce active monitoring/mentoring. Sufficient resources are reduced to reduce overall cost of hosting. Ergo, standard policies are enacted which are meted out in a draconian fashion as they can be employed by the lowest level employees.
Anyone who takes the extended effort to return their site to service then must employ the mounds of red tape to engage higher level employees.
The assumption is that anyone with the wherewithal to engage is probably validated and usually vindicated.

You were most likely suspended for violating the agreement you made with your host... no hosting company is responsible for your files... that's your responsibility. If a hosting company provides backups to you or lets you have your files after you violated the agreement, its a courtesy.. not a right to demand.

If your hosting account could still be restored, promise them that you are no longer moving to godaddy. You could even pay $20 in advance for the hosting account. Then, when you have access to the account, you could backup the files and decide to stay with the company or move to another one. Your only loss would be $20 only.

If there is a legit reason for the suspension, then the company is just looking out for the other users on the server.
If this is the case, ask if your account can be reactivated for 1 hour at XXpm, whatever time zone. (be ready to download all files)
If they do this, that shows they are just looking out for the health of the server, if they do not, then their actions are motivated by greed, this makes it a lot more difficult!
