Hostgator totally CRAP - CONFIRMED

this happened to me a few months back on a site that was getting about 12,000 legit visitors per day in the gaming niche.

I was really annoyed as it lost earnings with it being down twice in a short period of time, however the changes I made actually helped me to make more money so it wasn't all that bad.

They took mine down for usage because I wasn't using caching. I followed some instructions to set up wpsupercache with some settings they recommended and after that it was okay.

Actually resulted in the site making more money because it loaded a lot faster!

All these answers but no one asking the question of How do you make your $500/day!!

I have my sites on HostWinds business hosting too. At the beginnings I was very satisfied with them: the server speed is great, and the support is awesome. But now they started sending those CPU warning messages, I already received 3 of them in the past 5 days - so unfortunately the "no bullshit CPU limit" is not true anymore :(
They just started practicing HostGator's, iPage's (and their family hostings) methods to make clients upgrade to VPS - the "bullshit CPU limit" warnings started on HostWinds too :(

My account is not exceeding any CPU limit, for sure - because I have just 3 small sites with 300-500 visits/day. I also checked my AWStats and my visits are lowered to half comparative to the past month - also my bandwith usage is only 1/3 like before. Everything is 1/3 or 1/4 comparative to the last month, when I didn't received any CPU warnings. But now they saw I am pretty satisfied with their hosting, and they thought it is time to make me to buy a VPS from them, with applying that bullshit CPU warnings method :(

I answered their warning message with asking them about these "bullshit CPU limit" - I asked them why are they using this method to make me to upgrade to a VPS - and I asked for a screenshot about where can I see this CPU usage, if it is real or not. And in this moment their "awesome support" was gone too - they closed my ticket without any answer, and sent me the 3rd warning about my CPU. I sent them the same reply here too - and of course no answer yet; until now I was receiving very fast answers from them - now they don't are closing my tickets without answers. Because they can't sustain this bullshit CPU limits, of course :)

Did they threaten to close your account if you continue to overuse cpu limit?

There are several ways to overuse cpu limit, not necessary is visitors per day.
1) A lot visitors visit at one point. e.g like 100/500 visitors visiting at 1500-1600.
2) Query > Addon or plugins scripts.

No, they are not telling anything about disabling account - only about "causing downtimes", if I will continue to receive these warnings. I asked after how many warnings will this happen, but didn't get the answer for this part of my ticket.
1) I don't really understand this part; can you explain me what is this mean, please?
2) I already scanned my plugins with P3 Plugin Profiler, but my plugins are all right, they are not causing excessive CPU usage.

They are better then any other hosting company right now, i have hosted over 200 domains with them without any issues. Once i had a website getting 40k visitors a day which just crashed the hostgator server i was using, but still they managed to fix that in less then 1 hour saving me huge money. The same site was later hacked, again they fixed it within 2-3 hours. I have tried 2-4 other big hosting companies before and i never get positive response from them within 48 hours in case of emergency so i guess hostgator is the best host i ever tried.

Hey,

I'm with inmotionhosting since a little over two years. Honestly, I have never had a real problem with them, except one time. One of my programmers made a cron job which ran every 5 minutes and caused a lot of resource usage. Inmotionhosting send me an email saying that there is something eating too much resources, and they found out quickly that it was the cron job. Despite me not answering for 10 days, they DID NOT block my site or do anything. They simply send me 2 emails saying that I have to change the frequency, otherwise they'd have to suspend my account. I changed it after 10 days and everything went fine.

They might not be the cheapest, but I have never had better support with ANY company in my entire online career. I'm not really a professional, but their support could find pretty much every problem so far... even programming errors, which they claim that they don't give support for... but they did anyway.^^

I would never want to switch to any other hosting company to be honest. However, that's just my experience.

warm regards,
neocortx

ic, most of the gay resellers hosts like to use lame reasons to banned accounts/force upgrades.

1) For e.g you got 500visitors per day, but 200 out of 500 visitors visit at 8pm to 9pm... causing more cpu usage at one peak period. Thus, it will slow your website performance and excessive cpu usage.
you can find your peak hour and monitor the cpu usage.

you can use reserve ip to check the number of website hosting on your shared server. i remember they promise to host certain number of website in one server. i won't expect much from support tickets tho because we are cheap shared hosting customers :( .

I moved my sites from hostgator couple months back after having a few issues. Definitely a good move!

The really terrible thing about this thread, is that I still haven't moved the sites I wanted to.
Hopefully, I will get round to it by the end of the month ... or maybe just go for a beer. It is Summer.

I've noticed longer waiting times on HG live support. They also randomly changed the PHP version on my server a few weeks ago, causing my websites to go down for days without me noticing. :(

Really? Man hostgator are getting really bad! I can't believe it they don't care about anyone.
Everyone should leave them. Not sure if I can share a link to a Facebook page I found the other week but it's called hostgator sucks

Hostgator live chat support waiting time is now 30 minutes, meaning that they no longer have instant support. I can only vouch for two web hosts, Liquid Web and Blue Host. I'm with Blue Host now and I can say with certainty that they are the best in existence today after using 5 different web hosts.

Yeah I had problems with them earlier. Lucky I'm in Australia so the loss in traffic for us was over night. The problem was high CPU usage with something to do with the sql database.

I looked at the error and notice a pattern: doing_wp_cron=

How I fixed it:

Code:
define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', true);

I added that line to wp-config.php and it stopped the processes.

Done

Hostgator is not worth it. I used to host a vb forum with them .. I had to change host due to super bad support.

That's not uncommon at all when they are having downtime issues across multiple servers. By the way, BlueHost uses the same hardware as HostGator since most of their servers are at the same datacenter and they are owned by the same company. In fact, it's BlueHost's datacenter that caused all the downtime for HostGator servers over the past couple of years since they were acquired.

I realize I'm a bit late to this party, but why not just got for a VPS with a CPanel install?

I'm testing a simple VPS that costs me $11/month for 2 IPs and decent resources to run ~20 wp sites. I can add additional IPs at $2/month (and they can be different C Block IPs as well).

I also run a dedicated server (quarter rack, actually) for when I really need some powerful sites, but I find that the VPS route is the best quick fix, so I've started moving all my shared hosting domains off onto VPSes/dedicated servers (I have a total of 4 vpses with different companies, and then 4 servers in the quarter rack). I split 1 CPanel license between all the VPSes using CPanelDirect.net, and then use PLESK for my dedicated servers (which is spendier, but a bit easier to use IMO).

I would agree with this as well. Especially now a days where there are a number of "lowend providers" who are offering VPS plans for just $5-7/month. It shouldn't be too hard to find a good deal in this flooded market.

I've got VPSes with 3 different companies, 2 at $11 a month (for 2 IPs), and got in on one KILLER deal @ $39 a year - all are 50gb HD, 2gb Ram (2.5 burst), and 4x3.3ghz CPU.

Hell, I've actually considered creating a proxy network using the IPS because of how cheap they are (lol)..

edit: I realize $11 a month may not be the *best* deal for a VPS with those stats, but it's far from the worst.

The latest one I got is on a 1gbps port (other 2 are on 100mbps), so I'll be more comfortable with more domains on a gigabit port over a 100mbps

edit 2: At $11 for 2 IPs, that's cheaper than just about any shared hosting, and snappier too :)
