In layman's terms a node is a computer or a device on the network.

The wikipedia states:" active electronic device that is capable of sending, receiving, or forwarding information over a communications channel. It may either be a data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) such as a modem, hub, bridge or switch; or a data terminal equipment (DTE) such as a digital telephone handset, a printer or a host computer, for example a router, a workstation or a server."

    wikipedia- Node (telecommunications)
The term node as used in the field of telecommunications refers to an originating or terminating point of information or signal flow in a telecommunications network. In Network topology the term may also refer to a terminal of any branch of a network or an interconnection common to two or more branches of a network. In this context the term "terminal" means a device that is capable of sending, receiving, or sending and receiving information over a communications channel. Also, the term "network" as used in this context refers to an interconnection of three or more communicating entities.

I get that every so often

They count 'anything' on their shared hosting as a node

files, saved emails, txt files, anything saved in cashce (however you spell it)

it's actually quite easy to get up to their limit

you simply need to spend 20 minutes and weed out what you don't need in cpanel (don't do it via ftp program)

So now we think a node is a file?

I'll have to keep an eye on my hostgator account. I would have to think I'm over that by now. I think just uploading WordPress and my Plug-Ins and Themes are close to 1500 files, and I've got quite a few of them running.

Wait, so you can't have more than 50,000 files on your shared hosting account...even if the files don't amount to anything? I have a bunch of wp themes uploaded so i can preview what they look like. Looks like i'm gonna have to do some cleaning up. But are we are that's what it's referring to?

The files may, themselves, contain 0kb, but each name requires about ~1kb of disk space in the file system just for the name and location to be stored.
It may be a touch less, as I am going what I learned way back when, still though, look at the disk space to be used just for file names on 50,000 files.

Now think about defraging, scan disks, and time taken for other maintenance issues have to go through several hundred or thousand accounts with that kind of stuff in there. The server slows, resources are tied up, etc...

I was once with hostspanker for about three weeks and I simply hated them. I had alot of downtime and they didn't seem to know how to remedy it at tech support. I lost a bunch of money because much of what I was doing at the time was simple redirects from my domains hosted there to the product pages, and even THOSE weren't working. I switched to a company called Jumpline. They have VPS/VDS hosting accounts there and they were having their half price sale. I am so glad I did this; my downtime and hosting difficulties have gone the way of the dodo.

I read so much negative press on hostgator that I am now wondering if I should go ahead and set up those 15-30 Word Press blogs on the shared hosting plan I have with them. The idea is to build and forget. I shouldn't have to go back and clean up nodes, keep an eye on my account or whatever. That's a waste of time. Just my opinion.

Well, Dreamhost also sucks because they ask you upgrade too; they say the wordpress plugins "overuse their cpu", so i think hostgator and dreamhost are both scams. however i'll stay a while with them. i will host my database on hostgator and the pics with dreamhost.

I just received inode warning email too. I am working on cleaning my files.

I wonder if that has only to do with email messages or all the files ? I gotta talk to their online support.

If you guys want something reliable, and easily scalable, shell out a few extra bucks and go with Mediatemple!

The support is amazing, phone, email or web.

I tried many of those cheap hosting plans, and I've had so many issues I could write a novel about them.

You guys don't realize that all these $5 hosts are overselling. You will NEVER get what they promise. I'm surprised they let you have 50k files.
